Overview

This document is a user manual for the Hoover HL5 upright vacuum cleaner, providing comprehensive instructions on its assembly, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. The manual emphasizes safe use and efficient cleaning practices for various floor types and above-floor areas.

Function Description

The Hoover HL5 is an upright vacuum cleaner designed for domestic cleaning tasks. It features a powerful suction system and a brushbar for effective dirt and debris removal from both hard floors and carpets. The cleaner is versatile, offering multiple modes of operation including upright mode for floor cleaning, upright-accessory mode for targeted cleaning with tools, and PUSH&LIFT above-floor mode for portable, handheld cleaning. The integrated ANTI-TWIST comb on the brushbar helps prevent hair wrapping, ensuring consistent performance.

Usage Features

The Hoover HL5 offers a range of features designed to enhance its usability and adaptability to different cleaning scenarios:

1. Upright Mode:

  • Operation: To use, plug in the power cord, place a foot on the nozzle, and pull the handle backward to the desired operating level. The power cord can be secured in a clip on the handle to prevent damage during use.
  • Power Control: The cleaner is turned on/off using a dedicated button.
  • Floor Type Settings:
    • Hard Floor Mode: Upon activation, the brushbar status light is OFF, and the nozzle LED lights are always ON.
    • Carpet Mode: Pressing the CARPET button increases the brushbar speed for deep cleaning carpets, indicated by the brushbar status light turning WHITE.
  • Suction Control: A SUCTION CONTROL slider allows adjustment of suction power:
    • MIN SETTING: For long pile carpets or rugs.
    • MIDDLE SETTING: For medium pile carpets.
    • MAX SETTING: For hard floors or short pile carpets.
  • Brushbar Status Light: An integrated light indicates the brushbar's status:
    • OFF: Brushbar turning, nozzle LEDs ON (hard floor mode).
    • WHITE: Brushbar turning fast, nozzle LEDs ON (carpet mode).
    • RED: Brushbar stopped, nozzle LEDs OFF (due to high push force or obstruction).
    • FLASHING RED: Brushbar not turning, nozzle LEDs OFF (nozzle window incorrectly assembled).

2. Upright-Accessory Mode:

  • Preparation: Place the cleaner in the upright position. Press the wand release button to detach the wand. Then, remove the handle and wand assembly from the main product.
  • Accessory Attachment: Attach any required accessory directly to the end of the wand or handle using the latch-fit mechanism.
  • Stability: When using accessories in this mode, it is important to hold or support the cleaner in a safe position to prevent it from falling.

3. PUSH&LIFT Above Floor Mode:

  • Preparation: Position the cleaner upright. Press the PUSH&LIFT pedal to release the portable unit. Remove the main unit from the nozzle. Press the wand release button to detach the wand. Finally, remove the handle and wand from the main product.
  • Portability: This mode transforms the cleaner into a versatile and portable vacuum, ideal for above-floor cleaning tasks such as stairs and car interiors.
  • Accessory Attachment: Accessories can be attached to the end of the wand or handle for direct cleaning.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of the Hoover HL5. The manual provides detailed steps for various maintenance tasks:

1. Dust Bin Emptying:

  • Standard Emptying: Press and hold the dust bin release button to remove the assembly. Press the dust bin empty button over a rubbish bin. Press the lid button to release the lid, open it, and remove excess debris.
  • Allergy Sufferers: To minimize dust exposure, encase the dust bin in a large bag before emptying. Close the bag tightly and dispose of it immediately. Disposable gloves and a face mask are advisable. It is recommended that a non-allergy sufferer performs this task if possible.

2. Filter Cleaning:

  • Pre-Motor Filters:
    • Removal: Remove the dust bin assembly, then remove both pre-motor filters from the main unit.
    • Cleaning: Remove any excess debris, then wash the filters using lukewarm water.
    • Drying: Allow filters to dry for 24 hours before re-fitting. Filters must be completely dry before re-assembly.
  • Exhaust Filter:
    • Removal: Push upwards the exhaust filter cover release button, remove the cover, then press the exhaust filter release latch to remove the filter.
    • Cleaning: Remove any excess debris, then wash the filter using lukewarm water.
    • Drying: Allow the filter to dry for 24 hours before re-fitting. Filters must be completely dry before re-assembly.
  • Frequency: Filters should be washed at least once a month for optimum performance.

3. Brushbar Maintenance:

  • Inspection: If the cleaner is not picking up efficiently or the brushbar status light is red, the brushbar may need cleaning.
  • Removal: Slide the nozzle window slider to release and remove the nozzle window. Lift the brushbar end latch to release and remove the brushbar from the nozzle.
  • Cleaning: Remove any excess debris from the brushbar. The ANTI-TWIST comb helps prevent hair wrapping, but manual cleaning may still be necessary.
  • Re-assembly: Re-fit the brushbar to the nozzle. Re-fit the nozzle window by locating the front edge first, then "clicking" it into position at the back.
  • Warning: If the nozzle window is not correctly re-assembled, the brushbar status light will flash RED when the product is switched on.

4. Clearing a Blockage:

  • Floor Nozzle:
    • Remove the brushbar to visually identify and remove obstructions.
    • Clean underneath the comb area to remove excess dust and debris.
    • Visually check the nozzle neck for blockages.
  • Other Components & Accessories:
    • Remove the hose, handle, wand, crevice tool, and mini turbo nozzle from the product.
    • Vigorously shake each component and visually check for any obstructions, then remove them.

5. Troubleshooting:

  • The manual includes a troubleshooting section with common problems and their solutions, such as the cleaner not picking up debris, the brushbar not turning, or the cleaner cutting out due to overheating. It advises performing all maintenance tasks if the cleaner cuts out.

6. Important Information:

  • Hoover Service: For continued safe and efficient operation, servicing or repairs should only be carried out by an authorized Hoover service engineer.
  • Spares and Consumables: Always use genuine Hoover spares, available from local dealers or directly from Hoover.
  • Guarantee: The appliance is covered by a guarantee, with conditions defined by the local representative. Proof of purchase is required for any claims.
  • Thermal Cut Out: The cleaner is fitted with a thermal cut-out that switches off the appliance to prevent overheating if it is full, blocked, or has dirty filters. It takes approximately 45 minutes to reset automatically.
  • Environment: The appliance should not be treated as household waste but handed over to an applicable collection point for recycling electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Magnetic Material: The product contains magnetic material; users with implanted medical devices should consult their doctor.
