Overview

This document provides comprehensive operating instructions for the Hotpoint G640N, G640T, G640W, G640X, G640SN, G640ST, G640SW, G640SX, G640SK, and G640SB hob models. It covers essential information for safe use, installation, and maintenance of the appliance.

Function Description

The Hotpoint hob is designed for domestic use, primarily for cooking food. It features gas burners that vary in size and power, allowing users to select the most appropriate burner for their cookware. The hob is operated using control knobs, which regulate the size of the flame for each gas burner. Some models are equipped with a gas burner ignition system for automatic lighting and safety devices that stop the gas flow if the flame is accidentally extinguished.

Usage Features

General Operation: To turn on a burner, the user must place a lighted match or lighter near the burner, press the corresponding control knob all the way in, and turn it anti-clockwise to the "High" setting. For models with automatic ignition, simply pressing the knob all the way in and turning it anti-clockwise to "High" will light the burner, provided it is kept pressed until the burner lights. If a flame is accidentally extinguished, the control knob should be turned off, and the user should wait at least 1 minute before attempting to relight it. To switch off a burner, the knob should be turned clockwise until it reaches the "Off" position.

Practical Advice for Efficient Use: For optimal performance, it is recommended to use cookware appropriate for each burner size, ensuring that the flames do not extend beyond the bottom of the cookware. Cookware with a flat base and a cover should always be used. Once the contents of a pan reach boiling point, the knob should be turned to the minimum setting to conserve energy. The manual provides a table with recommended cookware diameters for Fast, Semi Fast, and Auxiliary burners. Users should ensure that pans do not overlap the edges of the hob during use.

Safety Precautions During Use: The appliance and its accessible parts become hot during use, so care must be taken to avoid touching heating elements. Children under 8 years of age should be kept away unless continuously supervised. The appliance can be used by children aged 8 and above, and by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, if they have been given supervision or instruction on safe use and understand the hazards involved. Children should not play with the appliance, and cleaning or user maintenance should not be performed by children without supervision.

Unattended cooking on a hob with fat or oil can be dangerous and may result in fire. In case of fire, users should NEVER try to extinguish it with water; instead, they should switch off the appliance and cover the flame with a lid or a fire blanket. No items should be stored on the cooking surfaces. Steam cleaners or pressure cleaners should never be used on the appliance. If the hob has a glass cover, any liquid should be removed from it before opening, and the cover should not be closed when gas burners or electric hotplates are still hot. The appliance is not designed to be operated by an external timer or separate remote control system. The use of inappropriate hob guards can cause accidents.

Installation Considerations: The appliance must be installed in permanently ventilated rooms by a qualified professional, adhering to current national regulations. The room must have an air extraction system for combustion fumes, such as a hood or an electric fan. Proper air circulation is essential for normal combustion, with an airflow of at least 2 m³/h per kW of installed power. LPG cylinders should not be installed or stored below ground level and should be kept away from heat sources. Kitchen cabinets adjacent to the hob and taller than the hob's top must be at least 600 mm from the edge of the hob. Hoods should be installed at a minimum distance of 650 mm from the hob, and wall cabinets adjacent to the hood at a minimum height of 420 mm. If the hob is installed beneath a wall cabinet, the latter must be at least 700 mm above the hob. Seals provided with the appliance should be applied along the outer edges of the hob to prevent air, humidity, and water ingress. The installation cavity should match the dimensions indicated in the manual, and fastening hooks should be used to secure the hob to countertops between 20 and 40 mm thick.

Maintenance Features

Switching Off for Maintenance: Before performing any cleaning or maintenance work, the appliance must be disconnected from the electricity supply.

Cleaning the Appliance: Abrasive or corrosive detergents, stain removers, anti-rust products, powder detergents, or sponges with abrasive surfaces should not be used, as they can scratch the surface. Steam cleaners or pressure cleaners are also prohibited. Typically, cleaning the hob involves wiping it with a damp sponge and drying it with absorbent kitchen roll.

Burner Maintenance: The removable parts of the burners should be washed regularly with warm water and soap to remove any burnt-on substances. Burner caps should not be placed in a dishwasher, as this can dull the aluminum parts. For hobs with automatic lighting, the terminal part of the electronic instant lighting devices should be cleaned frequently, and the gas outlet holes should be checked for blockages.

Stainless Steel Care: Stainless steel surfaces can be marked by hard water left on the surface for extended periods or by aggressive detergents containing phosphorus. After cleaning, rinse and dry any remaining water drops.

Gas Tap Maintenance: If the gas taps become jammed or difficult to turn over time, they must be replaced. This procedure should only be performed by a qualified technician authorized by the manufacturer.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues. If a burner does not light or the flame is uneven, users should check for clogged gas holes, ensure all movable burner parts are correctly mounted, and eliminate any draughts near the appliance. If the flame dies in models with a safety device, users should ensure the knob was pressed all the way in and held long enough to activate the safety device, and that gas holes near the safety device are not blocked. If the burner does not remain lit at the minimum setting, users should check for blocked gas holes, draughts, and proper adjustment of the minimum setting. For unstable cookware, users should ensure the bottom of the cookware is flat, that it is positioned correctly at the center of the burner, and that the pan support grids are correctly placed. If problems persist, users should contact a Service Centre.

Disposal: Packaging materials should be disposed of according to local legislation for reuse. Old household electrical appliances, in compliance with European Directive 2012/19/EC (WEEE), must not be disposed of in normal unsorted municipal waste streams. They should be collected separately to optimize material recovery and recycling, reduce environmental impact, and protect human health. The "wheeled bin" symbol on the product indicates the obligation for separate collection. Consumers can take old appliances to public waste collection areas, communal collection areas, or return them to a retailer when purchasing a similar new product, if national legislation allows. Major appliance manufacturers are actively involved in systems for collecting and disposing of old appliances.
