Overview

The HP D2828A HP52 is a 15-inch color monitor designed for use with Hewlett-Packard PCs, offering a 13.8-inch viewable image. This multi-synchronous monitor supports a range of video modes and is optimized for use with HP systems.

Function Description

The primary function of the HP D2828A HP52 monitor is to display visual information from a connected PC. It features a flat square tube with a 0.28 mm dot pitch, which contributes to excellent graphics quality. The screen is equipped with an anti-glare, anti-static silica coating to minimize reflections and reduce eye strain.

The monitor supports various video solutions, including VGA and Ergonomic VGA (640x480), Super VGA and Ergonomic Super VGA (800x600), and Ultra VGA (1024x768 non-interlaced). It offers a high refresh rate of 85 Hz in VGA and SVGA (VESA standard), which helps provide a flicker-free image and further reduces eye strain.

A key feature of this monitor is its display power management system, which complies with the VESA standard. When connected to suitably equipped HP PCs, the monitor can automatically reduce its power consumption. As an Energy Star Partner, the HP D2828A HP52 meets the Energy Star guidelines for energy efficiency. It can enter different power-saving modes:

  • Standby Mode: Consumes less than 60W. The screen blanks, and the front panel indicator light is constantly amber. The monitor remains active, but no image is displayed. Moving the mouse or pressing a key instantly restores the image.
  • Suspend Mode: Consumes less than 5W. The screen blanks, and the front panel indicator light is constant amber. Reactivating the screen by moving the mouse or pressing a key will restore the image after a few seconds.
  • Off Mode: Consumes less than 5W. The screen blanks, and the front panel indicator light blinks rapidly in amber.

The monitor also boasts Plug and Play capability, adhering to the VESA DDC1/2B standard. This allows the monitor to identify itself to compatible HP PCs, automatically setting the best refresh rate for the chosen resolution.

Furthermore, the HP D2828A HP52 complies with MPRII guidelines for upper limits of electrical and electrostatic emissions, as set by the Swedish National Board for Measurement and Testing. It also meets ISO 9241-3, ISO 9241-7, and ISO 9241-8 ergonomic standards, ensuring a comfortable viewing experience.

Usage Features

Setting up the monitor involves attaching its tilt and swivel base and connecting the necessary cables. The base allows for adjustment of the display's angle and orientation. To attach the base, the monitor should be turned on its side (never on the screen), and the base slid into the slots on the underside of the display until the locking tab clicks into place.

Connecting the monitor requires ensuring both the PC and monitor are switched off. The video cable connects from the PC's video outlet to the monitor's video input, with thumbscrews tightened for a secure connection. The power cord then connects to the monitor and a grounded power outlet.

The monitor's image quality, position, size, and shape can be adjusted using the digital controls located on the front panel. These controls include:

  • Brightness: Adjusts the overall picture brightness (image black level).
  • Contrast: Adjusts the contrast (image white level).
  • Width: Adjusts the width of the displayed image.
  • Horizontal Centering: Adjusts the horizontal position of the displayed image.
  • Height: Adjusts the height of the displayed image.
  • Vertical Centering: Adjusts the vertical position of the displayed image.
  • Pincushion Correction: Corrects vertical edges that appear to bow in or out.
  • Trapezoid Correction: Corrects vertical edges that do not appear parallel.

New settings are automatically saved 20 seconds after adjustment, indicated by the front panel lights. If an adjustment reaches its maximum or minimum value, the indicator light will blink. The monitor also includes a "Factory Settings" option, which allows users to return to optimum default values for most adjustments by simultaneously pressing specific buttons.

To minimize eye strain, it is recommended to use the highest supported image refresh rate for the chosen resolution, such as 85 Hz for 800 x 600. The monitor's Plug and Play feature will automatically select the best refresh rate if supported by the PC.

Maintenance Features

Proper placement and care are essential for the monitor's longevity and performance. The monitor should be placed on a flat, sturdy surface, away from excessive heat, moisture, dust, and sources of electromagnetic fields like transformers, motors, and other monitors. Direct sunlight exposure should also be avoided.

To maximize screen life and prevent damage such as "burned phosphor" (permanent image retention), several recommendations are provided:

  • Use the monitor's power management system (on HP PCs) or a screen saver program.
  • Avoid setting contrast and brightness to their maximum levels for prolonged periods.
  • If a power management system or screen saver is not available, switch the monitor off or reduce brightness and contrast to minimum levels when not in use.

The monitor automatically demagnetizes each time it is switched on, ensuring color purity. To maintain this, it is recommended to switch the display off for at least 30 minutes each week before turning it on again.

For cleaning the anti-glare, anti-static screen coating, a regular household glass cleaner can be used. The cleaning process involves:

  1. Switching the monitor off and removing the power plug (pulling the plug, not the cable).
  2. Wetting a soft cotton cloth with the cleaning solution and gently wiping the screen. Avoid spraying cleaner directly onto the screen to prevent dripping inside the monitor.
  3. Drying the screen with a clean, soft cotton cloth. Cleaning solutions containing fluoride, acids, or alkalis should not be used.

The HP D2828A monitor is designed with environmental considerations in mind. HP offers a product take-back program in several countries for recycling old monitors at the end of their useful life. Collected equipment is sent to HP's recycling facilities, where parts are reused, and the remainder is recycled, with special care taken for potentially toxic substances. The cathode ray tube used in this monitor does not contain cadmium.
