Appendix D. DS8870 to DS8880 model conversion
You can convert an existing DS8870 (models 961 and 96E) to a high-performance
DS8886 (machine type 283x models 985 and 85E or 986 and 86E).
DS8870 to DS8880 model conversion summary
The conversion is a non-concurrent operation requiring your planning and several
days of onsite IBM support with your full participation.
Model conversion summary:
v Unlike previous model conversions that only changed the model numbers, this
conversion also changes the machine type to 2831. This can require alterations to
your machine asset depreciation scheme.
v The only machine type for the model conversion is the 2831 with a one year
service warranty. The existing DS8870 warranty period is not applied.
v This model conversion changes the models from 961 and 96E to machine type
283x model 985 and 85E or 986 and 86E.
v Each DS8870 that is converted to DS8880 retains the existing (original DS8870)
frame serial number and worldwide node name (WWNN).
v Some configurations require more DS8880 frames to contain the same amount of
data in a DS8870 configuration. Each additional frame has a unique new serial
number. To determine the number of DS8880 frames required for your
configuration, contact IBM.
v IBM provides new frames, including the management console(s), processor
enclosures, power supplies, and I/O enclosures. The first expansion frame
includes power supplies and I/O enclosures. The second, third, and fourth
expansion frames include power supplies.
Note: The High Performance Flash Enclosures are not transferred to the new
985, 986, 85E, and 86E models.
v The device adapters, host adapters, storage enclosure assemblies, and drives
from the existing DS8870 frames are moved into the new DS8880 frames.
v Each DS8870 frame (without the adapters, storage enclosures, and disk drives) is
returned to IBM.
v Apply the DS8880 licensed machine-code keys after conversion and before
logical configuration is created. The DS8880 has a unique license feature. You
cannot apply the licensed machine-code keys from the DS8870.
v Any additional upgrades that are planned for DS8880 must be done after the
conversion is completed.
You must complete all of the prerequisites in the following table before the IBM
service representative starts the model conversion:
