Safety instructions

General information

Read instructions completely before starting up, keep accessible, use trained staff, follow safety regulations.

Intended use

Use

Batch mill for two grinding procedures, airtight container, zero material loss.

Impact milling

For hard, brittle material via beating rotor; granularity depends on duration.

Cutting milling

For soft, fibrous material via rotating blade; less heating.

Range of use

Indoor environments for research, teaching, trade, or industry.

Unpacking

Delivery scope

Lists items included: mill, grinding container, beater, tools, user guide, warranty card.

Useful information

Impact milling details

Use with Mohs hardness up to 6; A 11.3 beater for >4 Mohs. Grinds dry, non-fatty materials.

Cutting milling details

Reduces bulky, elastic, fibrous materials with high cellulose. Feed granularity max 10mm.

Working with coolants

Dry ice cooling (CO₂)

Mix feed with crushed dry ice, attach drive after vaporization. Avoid pressure buildup.

Liquid nitrogen cooling (N₂)

Use protective gear, beater A 11.1/A 11.3. Attach drive after vaporization. Avoid pressure buildup.

Commissioning

Voltage check

Verify mains voltage matches type plate before operation.

Grinding container preparation

Unscrew container, fill to max filling height, avoid overloading.

Grinding procedure

Screw container, press switch, lower drive slowly, repeat if needed. Grinding time max 30s.

Exchanging and replacing the grinding tools

Safety precautions

Wear gloves, tools may be hot, unplug power before exchange.

Procedure

Rotate drive, loosen nut, remove tool, clean parts, install new tool, tighten nut.

Malfunction and eliminating malfunctions

Malfunction display

Lights up if container not screwed or circuit breaker tripped.

Temperature and over-current protection

Mill protected by combined temp/over-current switch. Auto-reset.

Mill does not start up

Causes include power, switch, container, overheating, switch block issues.

Motor locked or switches off

Causes: too much material, coarse feed, tripped breaker.

Motor speed falls or mill locked

Causes: coarse feed, too much material, tough material, slow drive insertion.

Maintenance and cleaning

Drive cuts out

Causes: overheating, loose container, power interruption. Remedies: cool down, screw container, check power.

Lifting motion blocked

Cause: dirty middle section. Remedy: clean section, check/replace seal.

Cleaning procedure

Unplug, clean parts with brush/dishwasher. Disassemble for heavy dirt. Use approved agents.

Assembly

Drive section assembly

Insert spring, guide screws, align switch block, push drive section, tighten screws.

Spare parts ordering

Provide machine type, serial number, and item designation. Order via www.ika.com.

Repair procedure

Send cleaned device, request certificate, use original packaging for return.

Maintenance

Tool wear and replacement

Replace worn beaters/blades. Blades can be resharpened. Check balance if resharpened.

Seal replacement

Disassemble, remove old seal, clean seat, install new seal and O-rings.

Accessories

Grinding beaker A 11.5 note

Tefzel material, chemical/temp resistant, flaws do not affect quality.

Large grinding container A 11.4 instructions

Use double beater A 11.6, screw tight, keep shaft free of deposits.

Filling height and grinding results

Do not exceed max height to avoid overheating and poor results. Partial filling is faster.

Grinding process with double beater

Ensure shredded sample, check hardness (max 3 Mohs). Lower drive slowly, raise and switch off.
