Use the Wireless TROLL Com to connect an In-Situ instrument to a Bluetooth-enabled mobile
device and the VuSitu mobile app. The Wireless TROLL Com doesn’t have internal data storage.
It allows data transfer between an instrument and VuSitu (or Win-Situ 5 via a USB cable).

Overview

The In-Situ Wireless TROLL Com/Wireless Rugged TROLL Com is a communication device designed to connect In-Situ instruments to Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices running the VuSitu mobile app, or to a PC via a USB cable for use with Win-Situ 5. This device facilitates data transfer but does not have internal data storage.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Wireless TROLL Com is to act as a bridge between an In-Situ instrument and a mobile device or PC. It enables users to transfer data from the instrument to the VuSitu app for analysis and management, or to Win-Situ 5 on a computer. The device supports Bluetooth® and USB output options, making it versatile for various field and office setups. It is powered by a 3.6 V 2.9AH Lithium rechargeable cell (UBBL39-FL) and requires a 5 VDC USB charger (1 A or 500 mA) for charging.

Usage Features:

  • USB Connection (1): Located at the top of the device, this port is used for charging the Wireless TROLL Com or for connecting it to a PC for setup or data transfer via Win-Situ 5.
  • Dust Cover for USB Connection (2): Protects the USB port from environmental elements.
  • On/Off Button (3): A single press turns the device on or off.
  • Battery Charge Status Indicator (4): A series of green and red LEDs indicate the battery level:

    • Flashing red: Wireless TROLL Com, instrument, and Bluetooth-enabled device are not connected.
    • Continuous red: Wireless TROLL Com is connected to an instrument, but not to a Bluetooth-enabled mobile device.
    • Flashing green: Wireless TROLL Com is connected to the Bluetooth-enabled device, but not to an instrument.
    • Continuous green: Wireless TROLL Com, instrument, and Bluetooth-enabled device are all connected.
  • Connecting to VuSitu:
    • Requires the VuSitu mobile app (available on Google Play Store or Apple App Store).
    • Attach an instrument, turn on the Wireless Rugged TROLL Com, and launch VuSitu. The app will automatically connect.
    • To connect to a different instrument, press "Disconnect" in VuSitu, which then displays a list of available connections.
    • Once paired, VuSitu shows the "Connected Instrument" screen.
  • Connecting to Win-Situ 5:
    • Attach an instrument to the Wireless TROLL Com with a Rugged Cable.
    • Connect the USB cable from the Wireless TROLL Com to your PC's USB port.
    • Open Win-Situ 5 and select "No" when prompted to connect to a device.
    • Configure communication settings: Go to Preferences > Com Settings, select "Serial Communications" radio button, choose the correct Com Port, and click the check mark.
    • Click the yellow connect button at the bottom right of the screen.
    • If prompted to sync device time or update firmware, click "Yes."
    • Default communication settings for In-Situ instruments are typically: Baud: 19200, Data bits: 8, Parity bits: Even, Stop Bits: 1, Device Address: 1, Mode: Modbus-RTU.
  • Rebooting: If the device is unresponsive, disconnect it from power, turn it on, then hold the Power button until the bottom LEDs flash back and forth and turn off. Turn it back on and attempt to use.

Maintenance Features:

  • Charging: Charge the battery after each use to avoid full discharges. Do not store the device in temperatures above 122°F (50°C).
  • Cleaning:
    • Clean the surface of the Wireless TROLL Com with a damp cloth and mild soap.
    • Do not clean the charging port.
    • Clean dirty or corroded connector pins with alcohol.
    • Ensure all parts are fully dry before use.
  • Safety: Do not submerge the device or your mobile device in liquid. Do not use in temperatures beyond specified ranges. The device is not serviceable; do not attempt to disassemble it. It is safe to use above 2000 m.
