7. Use proper lubricant or no-lube wire to make pulling jobs smoother.
8. Determine which capstan to use. For loads less than 6,000lb./2,721 kg. use the large diameter
capstan. For loads more than 6,000lb./2,721 kg. use the small diameter capstan.
9. Loosely wrap the rope around the appropriate capstan starting with two wraps about capstan.
Start turning the capstan by stepping on the included footswitch. Continually add
wraps to the capstan while maintaining tension on the rope. The goal is to match the speed of the
capstan with the rope to turn at the same rate.
10. If the rope is slipping and the load is not moving, stop the puller and add one wrap. Repeat this
process until equal travel of the rope and the capstan is achieved. If the rope appears to be balling
up or overlapping, reduce your hand pulling force. Stop the puller and unwind one wrap, repeat
until an equal travel between the rope and the capstan is achieved. Ensure the capstan and the
rope do not slip for extended periods of time - if the rope slips about the capstan for extended
periods of time it will heat up quickly and cause damage to or cause failure of the rope. A common
hand tension of about 10 lbs./4.5 kg. applied to the rope is what your goal should be, letting the
puller do the work. As the pull becomes heavier, stop the puller and add a wrap - keeping an equal
travel between the rope & the capstan. As the load of the pull decreases, stop the pull and remove
wraps to achieve an equal travel between the capstan and the rope.

Note: To achieve optimum pulling speed, listen to the sound of the motor. If the motor
is straining, switch to the small diameter capstan.
