SERVICE AND REPAIR (Continued)
Table 12: Nitrogen cylinder service and repair instructions
Disorder Corrective Action
Rust spots, pits, and
corrosion deposits*
Clean corroded areas with wire brush, replacing cylinder if there is any corrosion penetration; or
repaint using a primer and nish coat.
Dents or abrasions* Depressurize, remove valve and destroy both internal and external threads on the cylinder to render
the vessel unusable.
Paint peeling Remove loose paint with a wire brush and repaint using a primer and nish coat.
Safety shipping cap threads
on cylinder nicked,
cross-threaded, corroded, or
worn
Clean threads with a stiff bristle brush. Small nicks, burrs, and
rough or feathered edges may be eliminated by careful ling.
If damaged, worn, or corroded severely, the cylinder should be scrapped and replaced.
Valve leakage suspected Apply soap solution over valve opening, around valve to cylinder joint, and all other joints, including
the valve stem. If soap solution bubbles at any point, depressurize cylinder and replace valve
assembly.
Valve handwheel or pull
lever corroded, damaged, or
jammed
De-pressurize cylinder and replace valve assembly; or consult Johnson Controls Technical
Services, Marinette, WI 54143-2542.
Gauge pointer immovable,
loose, or missing
Gauge is replaceable only on certain valve models. Refer to ANSUL® Technical Bulletin Nitrogen
Cylinder Valve Pressure Gauge Replacement Procedure (Form No. 87151, latest revision) for
requirements.
Missing, deformed, or broken
gauge crystal or bezel
Replace crystal and bezel assembly (see applicable parts lists).
Wrong gauge Gauge is replaceable only on certain valve models. Refer to ANSUL® Technical Bulletin Nitrogen

below acceptable operating
range

gauge reading, replace valve gauge by referring to ANSUL® Technical Bulletin Nitrogen Cylinder
Valve Pressure Gauge Replacement Procedure (Form No. 87151, latest revision) No. 57.
Retaining clamps loose or
binding
Clean and refinish; repair and refinish; or replace
Retaining clamp webbing or
pads worn or missing
Replace webbing (Part No. 3360) or grommet (Part No. 8688).
