Overview

The Johnson 5700-0800LZR Billet Laser Operator's Manual describes a JLX® Laser Billet Level with GreenBrite® technology, a Class II laser tool designed for professional use in demanding applications. This device is compliant with CRF 21 parts 1040.10 and 1040.11, as well as international safety rule IEC 285.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Johnson JLX® Laser Billet Level is to project a laser beam for various layout and alignment tasks. The laser beam is calibrated to a height of 1.75 inches above the tool, a reference height conveniently etched onto the tool's housing. This beam serves as a visual reference to identify potential obstructions in piping layouts, wall layouts, HVAC ducting, electrical conduit layouts, and other similar applications.

The tool incorporates multiple vials to facilitate setting specific angles. These include a pitch vial, a level vial, a 30° vial, a 45° vial, and a plumb vial. When an angle is set using these vials, the laser beam follows that angle, allowing users to extend 30°, 45°, or 90° reference beams over long distances. This combination of laser projection and angle measurement makes the tool versatile for a wide range of precision tasks.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Laser Type: Class II, <1mW, 520nm (GreenBrite® technology)
  • Accuracy: +/- 1/8" @ 100'
  • Operating Range: Up to 200'
  • Operating Temperature: 23°F to 104°F (-5°C to 40°C)
  • Storage Temperature: -4°F to 160°F (-20°C to 70°C)
  • Batteries: 2xAA (not included)
  • Battery Life: Approximately 13 hours
  • Dimensions: 8.0" x 2.25" x 0.75" (20.32 cm x 5.72 cm x 1.91 cm)
  • Vials: Pitch, 0° (level), 30°, 45°, 90° (plumb)
  • Magnets: Rare Earth (3)
  • Weight: 14oz (with batteries)
  • IP Rating: IP54 (rainproof)

Usage Features:

  • Power On/Off: The device is powered on by pressing the green button located on the battery door. To power off, the same green power button is pressed again.
  • Battery Installation: To insert batteries, the battery door is unscrewed, and two AA batteries (not included) are inserted according to the polarity indicated on the rear of the level. The battery door is then replaced, taking care not to over-tighten it to prevent damage to the O-ring seal.
  • Angle Measurement: The integrated vials (pitch, level, 30°, 45°, and plumb) allow users to set and verify specific angles. The laser beam then projects along the set angle, extending the reference over long distances.
  • Reference Height: The laser beam projects at a consistent height of 1.75 inches above the tool, which is etched on the housing for quick reference.
  • Safety Features: The tool includes a safety label indicating "CAUTION LASER RADIATION DO NOT STARE INTO BEAM CLASS 2 LASER PRODUCT AVOID EXPOSURE." Users are instructed to read all instructions before operating, not to remove any labels, avoid projecting the laser into the eyes of others, and not to set up the tool at eye level or near reflective surfaces. It also warns against placing the tool in a manner that could cause unintentional exposure to the laser beam, operating in explosive environments, or allowing untrained persons or children access to the tool. Viewing the laser beam through optical tools like telescopes is strictly prohibited. The laser tool should always be turned off when not in use or left unattended.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: Users are advised to insert fresh batteries for optimum performance and to replace them if the laser light appears dim or the tool fails to power on.
  • Storage: For extended storage (more than 3 months), batteries should be removed to prevent corrosion. Corrosion damage is not covered under warranty. The tool should be stored in its pouch when not in use.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Tool does not power on or remain on: Check battery polarity, replace batteries, ensure the battery door is tight, and try cycling the power.
    • Laser light is dim: Ensure fresh batteries are used, the laser is within the operating temperature range, and the battery door is secure.
    • Laser appears out of calibration: Users are instructed to contact Johnson for calibration service. The laser does not contain any user-serviceable parts.
  • Warranty: Johnson Level & Tool offers a lifetime guarantee on the product, with a one-year guarantee for electronics. Disassembly or repair by unqualified persons will void the warranty. Removal of the top safety label will also void the warranty. The user is responsible for verifying proper calibration of the instrument before each use.
  • Registration: Users are encouraged to register their product within 30 days to ensure warranty service and receive recall notifications.
