Overview

This document is a user guide for the Kidde Water Leak + Freeze Detector, Model 60WLDR-W-CA. This device is designed to detect water leaks and rapid temperature changes that could indicate potential freezing dangers, and then send notifications to a mobile device via Wi-Fi.

Function Description:

The Kidde Water Leak + Freeze Detector is a battery-powered device that uses two electrodes on its bottom to detect water leaks. It also monitors for rapid temperature changes to alert users to potential freezing pipes. When water or freeze conditions are detected, the unit sounds a loud alarm and can send notifications to a linked mobile device through the Kidde app. The device is Wi-Fi compatible, requiring a home Wi-Fi router and internet connection (802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz) Wi-Fi) to connect to a mobile device. Mobile alert services are ancillary and for informational purposes only, not intended for life safety or critical purposes, and are dependent on a stable Wi-Fi connection. The device itself is not a life safety device.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power: Two AA batteries (Alkaline batteries recommended; lithium batteries should not be used).
  • Environment: Operates between 0 - 40 °C (32 - 104°F) with ≤ 90% RH non-condensing humidity.
  • Waterproof Level: IP65.
  • Audible Alarm: 85+ dB at 3ft (1m).
  • Water Depth Detection Capability: Detects water at depths greater than 0.015 inches.
  • Wi-Fi: Requires 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz) Wi-Fi.
  • Radiation Exposure: Complies with FCC/IC RSS-102 radiation exposure limits, requiring a minimum distance of 20cm between the radiator and the user's body.
  • Alarm Duration (Default): 30 minutes.
  • Battery Conserve Time (Default): 1 hour (period of silence after an alarm to save battery power).
  • Status Update to App (Default): 12 hours.

Usage Features:

  • Mobile Notifications: Users receive notifications on their mobile device when hazards (water leaks or freezing temperatures) are detected and when the device's battery is low.
  • Easy Setup: The device utilizes QR code scanning for simplified setup and connection to the Kidde app; no additional hub is needed.
  • Account Management: Users can create and log in to their Kidde app account, add devices, and follow in-app instructions for enrollment.
  • Family/Friend Notification: The app allows users to notify friends and family of potential dangers.
  • Smart Hush: This feature allows users to silence false alarms for 8-10 minutes when they are home and on the same Wi-Fi network. Hush can be used repeatedly if needed. If an alarm is not Hushed within the first 60 seconds, there might be a delay of up to 30 seconds as the detector communicates with the cloud.
  • Voice Assistant Compatibility: The Wi-Fi detector is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, allowing for integration with smart home ecosystems.
  • Placement: Intended for indoor use only. Should be placed on a level, clean, dry surface in the lowest location where water may be present to minimize false alarms and ensure proper detection. Avoid metallic surfaces. Typical installation locations include near water heaters, sump pits, utility sinks, kitchen & bath sinks, toilets, washing machines, refrigerators, and dishwashers.
  • Floating Design: The device is designed to float, but users should avoid placing it where it could be trapped under obstructions by rising water, as this could reduce sounder output.
  • Wi-Fi Enrollment Reset: If issues arise during Wi-Fi enrollment, the device's wireless settings can be reset by removing and re-installing batteries after 30 seconds, or by shorting the two metal contacts on the bottom of the device three times within two seconds. The device searches for Wi-Fi connections for 5 minutes after power-up or reset.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Powered: Operates on two AA batteries. Fresh batteries are expected to last at least one year under normal conditions and default settings. Battery life can be affected by the number of activated alarms, test events, and custom app settings. Constant exposure to high or low humidity or temperatures may reduce battery life.
  • Low Battery Warning: The device is equipped with a low battery monitor circuit. When battery capacity is low, a "Low Battery Warning" will occur (Red LED blinks every 60s, Chirp every 60s). Batteries must be replaced within 7 days of this warning to ensure continuous detection.
  • Regular Testing: Users should regularly test the water leak detector by shorting the two metal contacts on the bottom of the device with a metal object (e.g., screwdriver or paper clip). This confirms the electronic circuitry, horn, and batteries are working, and sends a notification to the mobile device if configured. If the detector does not sound or gives erratic/low volume sound, it must be replaced.
  • Cleaning: The exterior of the detector and its contacts can be cleaned by wiping with a clean, water-dampened cloth. Detergents or cleaners should not be used as they can damage the detector. Painting the detector is not recommended as it can prevent water detection or obstruct alarm sound. Disassembling the detector to clean inside will void the warranty.
  • Substance Avoidance: Certain substances can affect the detector's sensors and cause false readings or damage. These include methane, propane, isobutane, iso-propanol, ethyl acetate, hydrogen sulfide, sulfide dioxides, alcohol-based products, paints, thinner, solvents, adhesives, hair spray, aftershave, perfume, and some cleaning agents.
  • Temporary Relocation for Projects: During activities like staining/stripping wood floors, painting, wallpapering, using adhesives, or mopping with liquids nearby, the detector should be moved to another location. Storing it in a plastic bag during these projects can protect the sensors. The area must be well ventilated when household cleaning supplies or similar contaminants are used. Reinstall the detector as soon as possible for continuous detection.
  • Troubleshooting: A troubleshooting guide is provided for common issues such as the unit alarming but the app status not changing, or the detector not alarming when water is leaking. Product support is available via phone (1-877-542-5471) or website (www.kiddecanada.com).
  • Warranty: The device comes with a one-year limited warranty covering defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. The warranty is void if the alarm is damaged, modified, abused, altered, or fails due to improper maintenance or inadequate power. Opening the unit will void the warranty.
