Overview

This document provides installation and maintenance instructions for a Kingspan unvented hot water cylinder with internal thermal expansion, designed for hot water energy storage. It covers both direct and indirect models, including those with solar input.

Function Description

The Kingspan unvented hot water cylinder is designed to store and supply hot water for domestic use. It is constructed from Duplex Stainless Steel for excellent corrosion resistance and features a rust-proofed steel case with environmentally friendly foam insulation. The cylinder is supplied with all necessary safety and control devices, pre-adjusted for optimal performance. It operates at a controlled pressure of 3.0 bar and is capable of delivering over 50 litres per minute, even in areas with poor water pressure, thanks to its high-quality inlet control set. The internal thermal expansion system eliminates the need for an external expansion vessel, simplifying installation and reducing space requirements.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Maximum Inlet Water Pressure: 12 Bar (1.2 MPa)
  • Operating Pressure: 3.0 Bar
  • Expansion Valve Opening Pressure & Maximum Design Pressure: 8.0 Bar
  • Opening Pressure of T&P Valve: 10.0 Bar
  • Opening Temperature of T&P Valve: 90°C
  • Maximum Pressure on Primary Circuit (Indirect & Solar Coil): 3.5 Bar
  • Minimum Inlet Pressure: 1 Bar (100 kPa)
  • Element Rating: 3kW @ 240V (for immersion heaters)
  • Fuse Requirement: 13A via Double Pole Switch (for immersion heaters)
  • High Limit Thermostat for Element - Temperature Set Point: 85°C
  • Cylinder Material: Duplex Stainless Steel (inner vessel)
  • Insulation: Environmentally friendly foam
  • Pipework Connections: All pipework connections are designed to accept 22mm copper pipe with 3/4" BSP male parallel thread.
  • Immersion Heater Length: 410 mm
  • Recommended Cupboard Size: 650mm wide by 750mm deep
  • Discharge Pipework (D2) Sizing: Varies based on length and number of bends, with a minimum of one pipe size larger than the safety device's nominal outlet size. Must have a vertical section of at least 300mm below the tundish and a continuous fall of at least 1 in 200 thereafter.

Usage Features

  • High Flow Rate: Designed to provide high flow rates, making it suitable for modern homes with multiple hot water demands.
  • Balanced Cold Connection: Includes a 22mm balanced connection on the inlet set for installations with showers, bidets, or monobloc taps.
  • Hot Water Pipework: Recommends 22mm pipework initially, reducing to 15mm or 10mm as appropriate, to minimize "dead leg" volumes and ensure quick hot water delivery.
  • Primary Coil Connections (Indirect Units): For indirect models, the primary circuit must be positively pumped (gravity circulation is not suitable) and can be open vented or sealed (up to 3.5 bar and 85°C flow temp). Uncontrolled heat sources are not suitable.
  • Solar Coil Connections (Solar Indirect Units): Specific instructions for connecting solar flow and return, including dedicated circulating pump, thermal and safety controls, and a solar differential control system.
  • Secondary Circulation: Can be used with secondary circulation, requiring a WRAS approved bronze circulator and non-return valve. A secondary return boss is standard on 210, 250 & 300 litre units; smaller sizes can tee into the cold feed pipe.
  • Thermostat Control: Immersion heaters are supplied with remotely mounted thermostats, offering adjustable control and a high-limit manually resettable thermal cut-out. Thermostats are factory fitted and pre-set to approximately 55°C.
  • Safety Devices: Includes a high flow rate inlet control set (3.0 Bar pressure reducing valve, 8 Bar expansion relief), a 10 Bar temperature and pressure relief valve, and an acetal tundish for discharge.
  • Electrical Supply: Requires a 240 Volt electrical supply for immersion elements, fused at 13A via a double pole isolating switch to BS 60335, with 2.5mm² heat resistant (85°C HOFR) sheathed flex.
  • Siting: Must be installed vertically on a flat base, protected from frost, and with exposed pipework insulated. Access for maintenance of valves and withdrawal of immersion heaters must be considered.

Maintenance Features

  • Annual Servicing: Requires annual servicing by a competent person to ensure safe working and optimum performance. This typically coincides with the annual boiler service.
  • Benchmark Checklist: Installers must complete the Benchmark Commissioning Checklist (page 28) and leave it with the householder for future reference. This is legally required for Building Regulations compliance.
  • Service Record: A service record (page 25) must be maintained, with entries made for each annual service. Failure to provide proof of annual servicing may void the guarantee.
  • Safety Valve Checks: Regular operation of the expansion relief valve and temperature/pressure relief valve (by twisting the cap and holding for 5 seconds) is required to remove lime deposits and verify they are not blocked. Discharge pipework should be checked for blockages.
  • Expansion Volume Recharging: Instructions are provided for recharging the internal air expansion volume, which depletes over time, indicated by intermittent water discharge from the expansion relief valve. This involves turning off heat inputs, isolating the cold supply, opening a hot water outlet, and operating the T&P valve until flow stops.
  • Filter Cleaning: The mesh filter on the inlet control set should be cleaned annually.
  • Thermostat Testing: Thermostats should be tested annually to ensure correct functioning and control of water temperature between 55°C and 65°C.
  • Immersion Heater Replacement: Detailed instructions are provided for safe replacement, emphasizing the importance of fully draining the cylinder, isolating electrical supply, using the correct tools, and ensuring proper sealing with new seals.
  • Draining: Instructions for safely draining the cylinder, including isolating electrical supply and boiler, attaching a hose to the drain tap, and opening hot taps to ensure efficient syphoning.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A fault-finding table (page 19) helps identify common issues (e.g., water escaping, cold water at hot taps, water discharge from safety valves, milky water, no hot water flow, noise) and provides corresponding solutions.
  • Spare Parts: A full range of spare parts is available from Kingspan, with contact details and online shop information provided.
