Overview

This document describes the KitchenAid Freestanding Outdoor Grill, an appliance designed for outdoor cooking. It covers installation, usage, and maintenance for several models, specifically 720-0891C/D/DA/G/H/HA (LP) and 730-0891C/D/DA/G/H/HA (NG).

Function Description:

The KitchenAid Freestanding Outdoor Grill is a gas-powered appliance intended for outdoor cooking. It can operate on either Liquid Propane (LP) gas or Natural Gas (NG), with a conversion kit available for switching between fuel types. The grill features multiple main burners, a warming rack, and side shelves for convenience. It is designed to provide various cooking methods, including direct and indirect heat, suitable for grilling a wide range of foods such as beef, pork, chicken, lamb, fish, seafood, and vegetables. The grill includes an igniter system for easy lighting and control knobs for adjusting flame intensity.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Fuel Type: Liquid Propane (LP) or Natural Gas (NG).
  • Burner BTU Rating: Each main burner has a specific BTU rating, with orifices drilled to different sizes to ensure proper gas flow. For LP gas, the main burner orifice size is 1.05 mm, providing 13,000 BTU/HR. For NG, the main burner orifice size is 1.75 mm, also providing 13,000 BTU/HR.
  • Gas Pressure (LP Gas): Operating pressure: 11" (27.9 cm) WCP. Inlet (supply) pressure: 11" to 14" (27.9 cm to 35.5 cm) WCP.
  • Gas Pressure (Natural Gas): Operating pressure: 4" (10.2 cm) WCP. Inlet (supply) pressure: 7" to 14" (17.8 cm to 35.5 cm) WCP maximum.
  • Dimensions: 48.3" (122.8 cm) wide, 23.1" (58.8 cm) deep, and 44.8" (113.8 cm) high. The cooking surface is 21.4" (54.3 cm) deep.
  • Clearances: A minimum of 36" (91 cm) must be maintained between the front of the grill hood, sides, and back of the grill and any combustible construction. A 36" (91 cm) minimum clearance must also be maintained below the cooking surface.
  • Igniter Battery: Uses an "AA" size alkaline battery.
  • High Altitude Operation: For elevations above 2,000 ft (609.6 m), orifice conversion is required, and input ratings are reduced at a rate of 4% for each 1,000 ft (304.8 m) above sea level.
  • Construction Materials: Stainless steel components are used for tube burners, grids, grates, and other parts, offering durability and resistance to corrosion.

Usage Features:

  • Outdoor Use Only: This grill is strictly for outdoor use and should not be operated in a building, garage, or any enclosed area.
  • Gas Supply Connection: For LP models, a 20 lb LP gas fuel tank (not supplied) and a gas pressure regulator/hose assembly are required. For NG models, a conversion kit (Part Number 710-0003) and a certified manual shut-off valve in the gas supply line are necessary.
  • Lighting: The grill can be lit using the electronic igniter by pushing and turning the burner knob to "H" (High). Manual lighting with a match is also possible using a manual lighting extension.
  • Flame Adjustment: Control knobs allow for adjusting the flame from High to Medium and Low settings. Air shutters can be adjusted to optimize flame characteristics (blue and stable, approximately 1" high). Low flame settings can be fine-tuned to prevent the flame from extinguishing.
  • Cooking Methods: Supports both direct heat (food placed directly over lighted burners for searing) and indirect heat (food placed over an unheated burner, with heat from adjacent lighted burners, ideal for longer cooking times).
  • Preheating: Recommended to preheat the grill on high for 10 minutes with the hood closed to achieve optimal browning and sealing of juices.
  • Food Safety: Emphasizes not leaving food out for more than one hour before or after cooking to prevent food poisoning.
  • Grilling Chart: Provides a comprehensive guide for cooking various foods, including recommended cooking methods, internal temperatures, and total cooking times.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Cleaning: All controls should be off and the grill cool before cleaning. Use soap and water with a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid steel wool on stainless steel surfaces.
  • Grill Grates: After cooking, turn burners to HIGH for 10-15 minutes with the hood closed to burn off food residue. Once cool, clean with mild detergent and warm water. For stubborn residue, soak in a solution of ammonia and water.
  • Warming Shelf: Clean with liquid detergent or all-purpose cleaner. For tough spots, use a commercial degreaser.
  • Exterior: Apply stainless steel polish to non-cooking areas after each cleaning to maintain the finish. Clean with warm water and a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Interior: Discoloration of stainless steel parts due to intense heat is normal. Clean in the direction of the grain with liquid detergent or all-purpose cleaner. A heavy-duty scrub sponge can be used for mild cleaning.
  • Burners: Clean the exterior with a wire brush. Clear clogged burner ports with a straightened paper clip. Inspect and clean burner/venturi tubes for insects and debris to prevent fire.
  • Grease Cup: Remove and clean only when the grill is completely cool to prevent grease buildup.
  • Igniter Battery Replacement: The igniter battery (AA size) should be replaced if the igniters stop sparking. The battery compartment is located on the right side panel.
  • Gas Supply Hose Inspection: Inspect the gas pressure regulator/hose assembly before each use for cuts, abrasions, or excessive wear, and replace if necessary.
  • Storage: Store LP cylinders outdoors and out of reach of children. The grill can be stored indoors only if the LP cylinder is disconnected and removed. Never store a spare LP cylinder under or near the grill.
