Overview

This document is a Use & Care Guide for a KitchenAid Microwave Oven, providing comprehensive information on its safety, installation, operation, and maintenance.

Function Description

The KitchenAid Microwave Oven is designed for heating, cooking, and drying food using microwave energy. A magnetron within the oven produces microwaves that reflect off the metal interior surfaces and pass through the turntable and appropriate cookware to the food. These microwaves are absorbed by fat, sugar, and water molecules in the food, causing them to move, producing friction and heat, which cooks the food. The oven is specifically designed for domestic use and is not intended for industrial or laboratory applications. It features various cooking modes, including manual cooking, staged cooking, and sensor cooking, to accommodate a wide range of food types and preparation needs. The oven also includes defrosting functions, both by weight and by time, to safely thaw frozen foods.

Usage Features

The microwave oven offers a user-friendly control panel with various keypads for different functions. The display shows the cook time remaining, the time of day (if set), or the timer countdown.

  • Start/Stop Cancel: The "Start" button initiates any function, and if non-sensor cooking is interrupted by opening the door, touching "Start" resumes the cycle. The "Stop Cancel" keypad clears incorrect commands, cancels programs during cooking, and is also used to lock/unlock the control panel.
  • Add 30 Seconds: This feature automatically starts the oven at 100% power for 30 seconds and adds 30 seconds of cook time with each additional touch, allowing for quick heating or extending existing cooking cycles.
  • Clock/Timer: A standard 12-hour clock can be set, and a timer can be programmed for up to 99 minutes and 99 seconds, which operates independently of cooking functions.
  • Language/Weight Entry Mode: The display language can be set to English or French, and the weight entry mode for defrosting can be switched between imperial (pounds) and metric (grams).
  • Control Lock: This feature disables the control panel keypads to prevent unintended use, activated by holding "Stop Cancel" for 3 seconds.
  • Manual Cooking: Users can set specific cook times and power levels (from 10% to 100%) for precise control over cooking.
  • Cooking in Stages: The oven supports up to two cooking stages, allowing for different power levels and durations within a single cooking cycle, including a defrosting stage if programmed.
  • Favorite: This control allows users to program, store, and recall up to three frequently used manual cook programs, each potentially having one or two stages.
  • Sensor Cooking: A sensor detects humidity released from food during heating and automatically adjusts the cook time. This feature is ideal for various menu items like dinner plates, fresh vegetables, and frozen vegetables, ensuring optimal results without manual time setting.
  • Menu (Sensor and Non-Sensor): Preprogrammed settings are available for quick and easy cooking/reheating of common items such as popcorn, pizza reheat, beverages, soup, potatoes, frozen entrees, and various vegetables.
  • Weight Defrost/Timed Defrost: The "Weight Defrost" feature uses preset programs to defrost meat, poultry, and fish based on their weight, while "Timed Defrost" allows for defrosting for a specified duration at 30% cooking power.
  • Turntable: The removable glass turntable rotates in either direction to ensure even cooking. It is crucial for proper operation, and the oven should not be used without it.
  • Cookware and Dinnerware: The manual provides guidelines for suitable materials, including ceramic glass, glass, china, earthenware, melamine, and paper products, and advises against using metal cookware or items with metallic trim to prevent arcing.

Maintenance Features

Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential for the microwave oven's longevity and performance.

  • General Cleaning: Before cleaning, all controls should be off, and the oven should be cool. Soap, water, and a soft cloth or sponge are recommended for general cleaning.
  • Microwave Oven Cavity: To prevent damage, abrasive cleaners, steel-wool pads, or gritty washcloths should not be used. For stainless steel models, rubbing in the direction of the grain is advised. For heavy soil, heating a cup of water for 2-5 minutes can help soften the soil for easier removal.
  • Odors: Lemon juice or vinegar can be used to eliminate odors by heating a cup of water with 1-2 tablespoons of either in the oven for 2-5 minutes.
  • Microwave Inlet Cover: This component should be kept clean to avoid arcing and damage to the oven, typically by wiping with a wet cloth.
  • Microwave Oven Door and Exterior: The area where the door and frame touch should be kept clean. Mild, nonabrasive soaps and detergents are suitable for the exterior, while glass cleaner can be used for the window. For stainless steel exteriors, a specialized stainless steel cleaner is recommended. Vinegar can be used for hard water spots.
  • Control Panel: A damp sponge or soft cloth with water is recommended for cleaning the control panel, avoiding chemical or abrasive cleansers.
  • Turntable: The turntable can be cleaned with a mild cleanser and scouring pad or in a dishwasher. It must be replaced correctly before operating the oven.
