Overview

The Kohlangaz Gosford HE is a coal-effect, high-efficiency gas fire designed for installation in conventional brick-built or lined chimneys, as well as fabricated flues and metal flue boxes. This manual provides comprehensive instructions for installation, maintenance, and user operation, ensuring safe and efficient use of the appliance.

Function Description:

The Kohlangaz Gosford HE functions as a decorative and heating appliance, simulating the appearance of a traditional coal fire while operating on natural gas (G20) or propane gas (G31). It is designed to provide warmth and ambiance to a room, with various control options including manual, slide, and remote control models. A key safety feature is the atmosphere sensing spillage monitoring system (oxygen sensing pilot), which automatically shuts off the fire if there is a partial or complete blockage of the flue, preventing the build-up of combustion products in the room.

    • Depth (flush-fit (mounting face to rear with 50mm spacer fitted)): 200mm
  • Gas Connection: 8mm Compression (Supplied with fire).
  • Flue and Chimney Suitability: Designed for use with conventional brick-built or lined chimneys and fabricated flues/metal flue boxes conforming to BS 715 / BS EN 1856-2.
    • Minimum diameter of circular flues: 125 mm (Without Flue Restrictor Fitted).
    • Minimum effective height of all flue types: 4 metres.
    • Not suitable for pre-cast flues.
  • Hearth Requirements: Must be installed on a concrete or non-combustible hearth, minimum 12mm thick, with the top surface at least 50mm above the floor. Hearth must be symmetrical about the fire opening, with a minimum width of 760mm and a minimum projection of 300mm forwards from the fire opening.
  • Debris Collection Volume (for brick-built chimneys): Minimum depth of 300mm for debris collection behind the firebox.

Usage Features:

  • Control Options: Available in Manual Control (MC), Slide Control (SC), and Remote Control (RC) variants.
  • Manual Control: Features a control knob for ignition and heat output adjustment.
  • Slide Control: Utilizes a control lever for ignition and heat output adjustment, located on the top right-hand side of the fire.
  • Remote Control: Allows operation via a remote handset.
    • Manual Operation via Handset: Press and hold the "power" button for two seconds until the red indicator light illuminates. Use (+) and (-) buttons to adjust heat input.
    • Manual Operation via Control Valve (Backup): In case of a lost handset, the fire can be operated manually using buttons directly on the control valve behind the ashpan cover.
    • Setting Time, Date & Temperature: The remote handset allows setting the time (12hr or 24hr), day of the week, and temperature (Celsius or Fahrenheit).
    • Snooze Mode: A programmable feature that automatically turns off the fire after a set period (1 minute to 4 hours).
    • Thermostat Mode: Regulates the burner setting between maximum and minimum to maintain a set room temperature. The fire must be lit manually before entering thermostat mode.
    • Battery Life Extension: For remote control models, the power isolator switch on the valve can be slid to the "0" position to extend battery life during long periods of non-use.
    • Handset Paging: If the handset is misplaced, pressing the (+) button on the control valve for 5 seconds will make the handset flash and emit an audible noise.
  • Fuel Bed: Features ceramic coals designed for a realistic coal effect. The exact positioning of coals can be finely adjusted for aesthetic appeal.
  • Glass Panel: The fire must never be used without the glass panel in position, or if it is broken or cracked.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Servicing: Servicing should be carried out annually by a competent person (registered installer). This is a condition of the Kohlangaz Fires guarantee scheme.
  • Spillage Monitoring System Check: The spillage monitoring system (oxy-pilot) must not be adjusted or put out of operation by the installer. Only complete original manufacturer's pilot assemblies can be fitted as replacements.
  • Coal Replacement: Only coals supplied with the fire should be used. When replacing, remove old coals and discard them, then fit a complete set of the correct type. Do not fit additional coals or non-genuine replacement sets.
  • RCF Articles Handling: When handling Refractory Ceramic Fibre (RCF) articles (coals), use a HEPA filtered vacuum to minimize fibre release. Replaced items should be sealed in heavy-duty polythene bags, labelled "RCF waste," and disposed of at a licensed landfill. Normal hygiene rules (no smoking, eating, or drinking in the work area, wash hands) should be followed.
  • Cleaning:
    • Trims/Fascia: Clean with a proprietary metal polish for brass or chrome, or a clean, damp cloth for black painted metal parts.
    • Fuel-bed Components: Do not clean the coals or fuel-bed components with cleaning agents or water. Any damaged parts must be replaced.
    • Glass Panel: Clean with a clean damp cloth and ceramic glass cleaner. Do not use scouring pads. Condensation can cause marks on the inside face of the glass panel.
  • Removal/Re-fitting of Components (for servicing):
    • Glass Panel: Instructions are provided for safe removal and re-fitting of the glass panel.
    • Burner Assembly: Detailed steps for removing and re-fitting the burner assembly are provided for manual, slide, and remote control models.
    • Piezo Igniter (MC models): Instructions for removal and re-fitting.
    • Control Tap (MC models): Instructions for removal and re-fitting.
    • Oxy-Pilot Assembly (MC/SC/RC models): Due to tight tolerances, only a complete new pilot assembly can be fitted for replacement.
    • Battery Ignitor (SC models): Instructions for removal and re-fitting.
    • Control Cable (SC models): Instructions for replacing and correctly tensioning the operating cable.
    • Remote Gas Valve (RC models): Instructions for removal and re-fitting.
    • Batteries (SC/RC models): Instructions for replacing batteries in slide control models (1.5V AA Alkaline) and remote control handsets (AA alkaline).
  • User Replaceable Parts: The only user-replaceable parts are the fuel-bed components and coals. All other parts must be replaced by a competent person. Part numbers are provided for ordering.

Installation Requirements:

  • Installation must be carried out by a Registered Installer in accordance with Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 (as amended) and relevant Building Regulations.
  • No purpose-made additional ventilation is normally required in G.B. For I.E. and Northern Ireland, consult local regulations. Any ventilation must be checked periodically for obstruction.
  • A flue restrictor baffle is supplied and should only be used in 225 x 225mm brick-built chimneys with excessive flue pull. It must not be fitted in metal flue boxes or 125mm diameter lined flues.
  • A spillage test must always be carried out after installation to ensure satisfactory clearance of flue products.
  • Unused gas supply inlet apertures must be sealed with foil tape to prevent flame reversal and damage to the burner/control systems.
  • The fire can be fitted below a combustible shelf, with specific clearance requirements based on shelf depth.
  • If fitted directly to a wall without a fireplace, soft wall coverings may be affected by heat.
