Overview

This document is an owner's manual for the 2009 KTM 990 Super Duke and 990 Super Duke R motorcycles, providing essential information for operation, maintenance, and safety.

The manual begins by congratulating the owner on their purchase of a state-of-the-art sport motorcycle and emphasizes the importance of proper cleaning and maintenance for enjoyment. It includes fields for the owner to record the frame number, engine number, key number, and the stamp of the dealer, which are crucial for identification and service records.

A disclaimer states that all information is without obligation and KTM reserves the right to modify equipment, specifications, prices, colors, and other aspects without prior notice. KTM is not liable for deviations, illustrations, or errors, and notes that illustrated models may contain extra equipment not standard. The manual is copyrighted by KTM-Sportmotorcycle AG, Mattighofen, Austria, and prohibits reprinting without written allowance.

For Australia, specific consumer information is included regarding tampering with noise control systems. Owners are warned that removing or rendering inoperative any noise control device, or using the vehicle after such removal, is prohibited by law.

The "Important Information" section details the intended purpose of the motorcycles:

  • The 990 Super Duke is designed for paved roads and is not intended for race courses or off-road use.
  • The 990 Super Duke R is designed for paved roads and race courses but is not intended for off-road use.

The manual stresses the importance of reading the entire Owner's Manual before riding to understand handling, injury protection, and service/maintenance. It highlights two types of warnings:

  • WARNING: Ignoring these instructions can endanger your body and your life.
  • CAUTION: Ignoring these instructions could cause damage to parts of your motorcycle or render it not road-safe.

The manual is current with the latest information for the model series at the time of printing, acknowledging minor deviations due to design enhancements. It is an integral part of the motorcycle and must be transferred to a new owner upon sale.

Regarding service, adherence to the service, maintenance, and operating instructions for the engine and chassis is a prerequisite for faultless operation and preventing premature wear. Observing prescribed breaking-in periods, inspection intervals, and service intervals significantly prolongs the motorcycle's service life. The manual also notes that extreme conditions, such as race course use, may necessitate servicing or replacing wear parts before the specified service limit.

The "Warranty" section states that service work specified in the "Lubrication and Maintenance Schedule" must be performed by an authorized KTM workshop, which possesses the qualified technicians and special tools. Owners must ensure all service work is verified in the service manual to maintain warranty rights. The warranty becomes void for damage or consequential damage resulting from manipulations or conversions to the motorcycle.

For "Automotive Fluids," the manual specifies that only fuels, lubricants, and liquids with equivalent specifications as listed in the Owner's Manual should be used, in accordance with the maintenance schedule.

Under "Spare Parts, Accessories," it advises using only KTM-approved parts and accessories for safety, as KTM will not assume liability for other products or consequential damage from their use.

The "Environment" section encourages responsible motorcycle use to avoid environmental problems and conflicts with others. It emphasizes using the motorcycle lawfully, being environmentally conscious, and respecting others' rights to safeguard the future of motorcycle sports.

The manual then moves into detailed descriptions of the motorcycle's operation instruments.
