Overview

The KE7200 / KE7100 is an easy-to-operate, intuitive LAN tester designed for various network testing and troubleshooting applications. The KE7200 is an Ethernet Performance Tester, while the KE7100 is a LAN Cable Tester, with the KE7200 offering additional functionalities such as IP testing and measurement storage.

Function Description

The device is primarily used for:

  • Testing and starting up LAN networks: Supports 10/100/1000 Mbit LAN networks.
  • Verifying new LAN installations: Ensures proper setup and functionality.
  • Troubleshooting existing LAN installations: Helps identify and resolve network issues.
  • Logging network tests: The KE7200 can save test results for later analysis.
  • Cable mapping and fault finding: Identifies mis-wiring, short circuits, open circuits, and split pairs.
  • Testing PoE/PoE+/PoE++ performance: Measures available power in Watts according to IEEE 802.3af/at/bt standards (up to 90 watts).
  • Measuring length: Determines cable and wire lengths using TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) up to 150 meters.
  • Finding cables: Transmits trace tones for identifying cables with a capacitive probe.
  • External voltage detection: Checks for external voltage on the line before starting tests.

KE7200 Specific Functions:

  • IP tests: Supports static IP or DHCP, including ping and stress tests.
  • Network scan: Lists all found subscribers, displaying name, IP address, and MAC address.
  • Targeted ping: Pings individual addresses and displays lost responses, min/max/average response times.
  • Stress test: Performs constant pings with adjustable frame sizes (32 to 1024 bytes).
  • Storage of measurements: Saves test results in the device and allows printout using the KE Manager software.

Usage Features

  • Intuitive Operation: Designed for fast and easy use with only seven buttons (ESC, ON/OFF, four arrow buttons, SEL).
  • Menu Navigation: Arrow buttons for scrolling UP/DOWN and LEFT/RIGHT, SEL button to select functions or start tests, ESC button to undo steps.
  • Wiring Definitions: Users can select from 16 predefined wiring versions (UTP, STP, CR) or create custom definitions. Correct wiring definition is crucial for accurate Pass/Fail results and split pair identification.
  • Velocity (VP) Setting: Allows precise length measurement by setting the propagation velocity of the signal. VP data can be obtained from cable manufacturers or determined from a known cable length.
  • Cable Type Selection: Seven different cable types with predefined VF factors are available, and users can create their own definitions.
  • Device Settings: Configurable options include language (German/English), units (meters/feet), battery type (primary/rechargeable), backlight duration, auto power-off time, key beep, sound, and contrast.
  • Remote ID: KE7010 remote units have programmable IDs (1-32) for managing multiple remotes in larger installations.
  • KE Manager Software (KE7200 only): A Windows-based tool for managing the KE7200, downloading measurement data, configuring settings, printing reports, and updating firmware.
  • Firmware Updates: The device supports program updates via Ethernet connection to a PC using the KE7x00_FLASH.exe program.
  • Data Saving (KE7200 only): Measurements can be saved with unique customer names/numbers, sorted, printed, and stored on a PC or network. Approximately 14,000 entries are possible.
  • Display Information: Shows wire mapping, identified errors, distance to faults, remote unit ID, cable wiring type, and VF value.
  • Link Light Blink: Helps identify active ports in a network.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Replacement:
    • Loosen two bottom screws in the bumper, pull bumper downward.
    • Remove old AA batteries from the holder and replace with new ones, observing polarity.
    • Do not combine new and old batteries; use batteries of the same type and date of manufacture.
    • Return old batteries to a supplier or recycling facility.
  • Battery Type Setting: The device allows setting the battery type (primary or rechargeable) to ensure accurate capacity display due to different voltage characteristics.
  • Battery Removal for Long Storage: Remove batteries if the device will not be used for a long time to prevent damage from leaking batteries. The battery compartment is exchangeable if damaged.
  • Protection: The tester is protected from splashing water and dust by the front covering, though it is not water-tight.
  • Factory Reset: All settings can be reset to factory defaults.
  • Firmware Update: New functions, improvements, or bug fixes can be installed via a program update, ensuring the device stays current.
  • Accessory Use: Only operate the device with originally provided accessories to prevent incorrect test results or device damage.
