Do you have a question about the Lampert PUK 3s professional and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The "PUK 3s professional" and "PUK 3s professional plus" are compact and versatile TIG impulse welders designed for precision welding under a welding microscope. These devices are suitable for spot welding on precious metals and their alloys, steel and steel alloys, titanium, and various non-ferrous metals. Their operating principles and application spectrum are very similar to laser welding, allowing for precise positioning of small, stable welds or welds in hard-to-reach or deep-lying positions.

Function Description:

The PUK 3s devices enable fine and minute welds by controlling welding parameters such as impulse length (welding time) and weld power. The welding process is initiated by touching the electrode tip to the workpiece, with or without minimum pressure. The device automatically performs the welding procedure, which includes safety gas encasing the welding spot, an audible signal announcing the arc, the appearance of the light arc, and then the cessation of safety gas supply. The welding process can be stopped at any time by removing the electrode from the workpiece.

The devices offer several welding modes:

  • Standard mode: An all-round program suitable for many different applications, with welding times ranging from 4-30ms and power from 20-100%.
  • HF-Pulse mode: Developed primarily for welding common silver alloys, this mode is also well-suited for avoiding heat cracks when used with longer welding times.
  • Gap (Joint-Mode): This pulse shape is recommended for applications requiring welds in deep joints or angles.
  • Micro (Micro-Mode): This setting allows for precise welds on very thin materials, particularly those smaller than 0.4mm, and for fine build-up welds (e.g., at claw settings), offering a particularly fine output gradation and a special pulse shape.

The "PUK 3s professional plus" model includes programming capabilities, allowing users to personalize and store their own welding parameter settings in 5 additional memory slots, in addition to 5 pre-programmed slots. These settings can be recalled at any moment. The device also automatically saves the last three sets of welding parameters used.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Main Voltage: ~115 V / 50-60 Hz, +/-15%. The device is set for 115 V ex works but can operate with 100 volts due to its tolerance.
  • Mains fuse: T 6.3 A.
  • Power input:
    • "PUK 3s professional plus": 400 VA
    • "PUK 3s professional": 350 VA
  • Operating voltage: 30-43 V.
  • No I-load voltage: 43 V.
  • Duty cycle: 80%.
  • Max. charging time: 0.8 seconds.
  • Inert gas: Minimum ARGON 99.9% (ARGON 4.6).
  • Maximum gas pressure: 4 bar.
  • Inert class: I.
  • Insulation class: B.
  • Protection Method: IP 21S.
  • Weight:
    • "PUK 3s professional plus": 8.8 kg
    • "PUK 3s professional": 8.4 kg

Usage Features:

  • LCD Display: Shows power in percent (%), impulse length (welding time) in milliseconds (ms), impulse form, current mode setting (Standard, HF-Pulse, Gap, Micro), program indicator (P1-P10), and program name (only "PUK 3s professional plus").
  • Controls: Includes a STAND BY - SWITCH, PROGRAM KEY (for "PUK 3s professional plus"), MODE - CHANGE-OVER button, IMPULSE LENGTH / WELDINGTIME rotary knob, and WELD POWER DIAL (adjustable welding dial).
  • Connections:
    • Connector socket for hand piece (-).
    • Sockets (+) for connecting contact elements like welding table, welding clamp, or holding pliers.
    • Connection socket for welding shield ("Shutter / Welding Shield").
    • Connection socket for foot switch (optional accessory).
    • Connection socket for microscope lighting ("LED-Lamp 800 mA").
    • Inert gas connector for a Ø 6.0 mm pressure hose.
  • Eye Protection: Only Lampert-eye protection systems ("MEZZO welding microscope" or "PUK optics unit") are permissible. The eye protection filter (shutter) can be switched from bright to dark by pressing the welding output regulator. It must be immediately replaced if it fails to switch.
  • Inert Gas Supply: Requires a supply of inert gas (approx. 2 litres/min). The device will display "Gas error!!! Check Pressure" if gas is not supplied or pressure is too low. Maximum operating pressure should be 4 bars.
  • Language Selection: The display language can be changed between English, Italian, Spanish, French, and German by pressing both the "Mode" button and the "Power" rotary knob for 2 seconds.
  • Foot Switch (optional accessory): Allows activation of the welding process by pressing the foot switch. The foot switch function can be activated or deactivated by holding it for approximately 1 second.
  • Electrode Sharpening: Electrodes should be sharpened with a diamond grinder at an angle of approximately 15° for optimal results. Only original, thorium dioxide-free electrodes should be used.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Care: The PUK 3s requires minimum care under ordinary working conditions. Regular checks of power plugs, power cables, and welding cables for damage are recommended.
  • Hand Piece Maintenance: Ensure hand piece parts are easy to operate. Clean the electrode thread of the hand piece if necessary to ensure optimal contact with the electrode.
  • Wearing Parts: Nozzle, electrode screw connection, electrodes, and pliers devices are wearing parts and are not subject to warranty.
  • Fuse Replacement: If fuses need to be replaced, only use fuses with the same values. Installing inappropriate fuses (e.g., too strong) will void the warranty.
  • Device Opening: The device should only be opened or modified by authorized customer service technicians. Unauthorized opening or modification will void all warranties and liability claims.
  • Original Parts: Use original parts only for maintenance and updating. Lampert Werktechnik GmbH's customer service department is available for assistance.

Safety Instructions:

  • Opening the device is permitted only by trained experts after disconnecting power and ensuring all components are discharged.
  • Always use original cables and ensure the workpiece clamp is fastened properly.
  • Disconnect the device from the mains for any repair or service work.
  • Be aware of open circuit voltage, which is the highest and most dangerous voltage for welding current.
  • If the device shows visible damage or functional errors, shut it off and secure it against unauthorized use.
  • Observe appropriate safety measures when handling gas bottles and gases.
  • Wear protective gloves (without high plastic fiber content) to protect against sparks, splashes, and UV rays.
  • Wear appropriate, non-synthetic clothing.
  • Be aware of burn danger from heated workpiece and electrode points.
  • Do not look into the arc without protecting your eyes with a welder's face protection shield (minimum protection level 11).
  • Ensure sufficient ventilation when welding in small rooms to disperse smoke and dangerous gases.
  • Never weld containers that have been used for storing gas, fuel, or mineral oil due to explosion risk.
  • Secure gas bottles against falling over, falling down, and heating up (max. 50°C).
  • Place the device on a flat, stable, non-combustible, insulated material base, ensuring cool air can reach its entire surface. Do not cover the device.
  • Prevent metal dust from directly entering the device.
  • As soon as the mains power switch is "ON," the terminal clamp and cables receive electrical current. Ensure these items do not contact electrically conducting or earthed materials to prevent unwanted operating errors.
  • No liability will be assumed for the durability of welding spots. It is recommended to always check spots and solder them in case of doubt.
  • The device is not authorized for welding teeth fittings (dental techniques).
  • Operation in outdoor areas is prohibited; use in dry room areas only.
