Overview

This document describes the installation and maintenance of Lennox CB29M and CB30M Elite® Series Multi-Position Blower Coils. These units are designed for indoor installation only and work with a matched remote outdoor unit and optional field-installed electric heat.

Function Description

The Lennox CB29M and CB30M Elite® series blower coil units are multi-positional, meaning they can be configured for upflow, downflow, horizontal right-hand discharge, or horizontal left-hand discharge installations. They are factory-configured for upflow or horizontal right-hand discharge, with field modification required for downflow or horizontal left-hand discharge. The primary function is to provide conditioned air as part of a heating and air conditioning system, working in conjunction with an outdoor unit and optional electric heat. The units include a factory-installed, internally mounted expansion valve and a filter for air quality.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model Numbers: CB29M-21/26, CB29M-31, CB29M-41, CB29M-46, CB29M-51, CB29M-65, CB30M-21/26, CB30M-31, CB30M-41, CB30M-46, CB30M-51, CB30M-65.
  • Dimensions: Detailed dimensions (in inches and millimeters) are provided for upflow, downflow, and horizontal left/right-hand discharge configurations. For example, a CB29M-21/26 unit has an "A" dimension of 45-1/4 inches (1149 mm), a "B" dimension of 16-1/4 inches (413 mm), and a "C" dimension of 20-5/8 inches (524 mm). Larger models like the CB29M-65 have an "A" dimension of 52-1/2 inches (1334 mm).
  • Refrigerant Line Sets: The units are compatible with Lennox L15 (sweat) series line sets or field-fabricated refrigerant lines. L10 (flare) line sets can be used by cutting off the flare nut. Specific liquid and vapor/suction line sizes are provided per model:
    • CB29M-21/26: 3/8 in. (8 mm) liquid, 5/8 in. (16 mm) vapor.
    • CB29M-31/41: 3/8 in. (10 mm) liquid, 3/4 in. (19 mm) vapor.
    • CB29M-46/51: 3/8 in. (10 mm) liquid, 7/8 in. (22 mm) vapor.
    • CB29M-65: 3/8 in. (10 mm) liquid, 1-1/8 in. (29 mm) vapor.
  • Filter Sizes:
    • CB29M/CB30M-21/26, CB29M-31: 15 x 20 inches (381 x 508 mm).
    • CB29M-41, -46, CB30M-31: 20 x 20 inches (508 x 508 mm).
    • CB29M-51, -65, CB30M-41, -46: 20 x 22 inches (508 x 559 mm).
    • CB30M-51, -65: 20 x 24 inches (508 x 610 mm).
  • Blower Performance Data: Extensive tables (Tables 3-20) provide blower performance data, including CFM (cubic feet per minute), L/s (liters per second), and motor watts at various external static pressures (in. w.g. and Pa) for different blower taps (low, medium, high, medium-low, medium-high) and voltages (208/230V and 460V). This data is measured external to the unit with the air filter in place, assuming electric heaters have no appreciable air resistance.
  • Electrical Requirements: Wiring must conform to National Electric Code ANSI/NFPA No. 70 or Canadian Electric Code Part I, CSA Standard C22.1, and local building codes. Only copper conductors are to be used. Separate openings are provided for 24V low voltage (Class II) and line voltage wiring to prevent combining voltages in one opening. Unit nameplate specifies minimum circuit ampacity and maximum overcurrent protection size.

Usage Features

  • Multi-Position Installation: Units can be configured for upflow, downflow, horizontal right-hand, or horizontal left-hand discharge.
  • Disassembly for Installation: CB30M units can be disassembled into sections (blower and coil assemblies) to facilitate movement in tight installation spaces.
  • Drain Pan Configuration: For upflow applications, the horizontal drain pan must be removed. For downflow applications, a specific kit (83M57 / LB-109844A) is required. Horizontal applications may require an auxiliary drain pan.
  • Condensate Drain: Main condensate drain must be routed downward to an open drain or sump, with a trap installed in the main drain line. For downflow units, the auxiliary drain must also be connected to a drain.
  • Blower Speed Adjustment: Blower speed is adjusted by changing taps at the harness connector on the blower motor.
  • Combustible Flooring: For installations on combustible flooring, an additive base (figure 6) is required, with specific dimensions for the floor opening.
  • Sealing: It is crucial to seal the unit to prevent warm air and moisture infiltration, especially in high humidity or unconditioned areas. Armaflex or Permagum should be used around liquid and suction line entry points, drains, and electrical inlets.

Maintenance Features

  • Filter Maintenance: Filters should be inspected monthly and cleaned or replaced when dirty. Reusable filters can be washed with water and mild detergent. Replacement filter sizes are provided. The filter access panel must be in place during operation to prevent water blow-off.
  • Refrigerant System: Evaporators use nitrogen or dry air as a holding charge. Before installation, check for pressure. After installation, pull a vacuum on the line set and coil before releasing the unit charge.
  • Brazing Protection: When brazing suction lines, a wet rag should be used to protect the TXV bulb. A heat shield (damp rag) is required against the piping plate and around connections to prevent damage to paint.
  • Condensate Drain Cleaning: Drain construction and routing should facilitate future cleaning.
  • Safety Warnings: The manual includes warnings about fiberglass wool (known to cause lung cancer and irritation), improper installation leading to property damage or injury, and the importance of qualified installers. It also highlights the ban on intentional venting of refrigerants (CFCs and HCFCs) and the need for approved recovery, recycling, or reclaiming methods.
