Overview

This document serves as the owner's manual for an LG Dehumidifier, model UD501KOG5, providing comprehensive instructions for its operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. It emphasizes safety precautions and proper usage to ensure the appliance's longevity and efficient performance.

The dehumidifier's primary function is to reduce the humidity level in an indoor environment. It achieves this by drawing in air from the room, absorbing moisture, and then expelling drier air. The appliance is designed to operate within a temperature range of 41 °F - 90 °F (5 °C - 32 °C). Operation outside this range can lead to issues such as water freezing inside the product at lower temperatures or a protective device deactivating the unit at higher temperatures to prevent damage. It's important to note that the dehumidifier does not have a cooling or heating function; the indoor temperature may rise slightly during operation due to heat generated by the process.

Usage Features:

The dehumidifier features a user-friendly control panel and display. The display shows both the current humidity level (ranging from 25-90%) and the desired humidity setting (which can be adjusted from 30-80% in 5-percent increments).

  • Power Control: A dedicated power button allows users to start and stop the dehumidifier. When restarting immediately after shutdown, there's a 3-minute delay before the compressor begins operating, a normal protective measure.
  • Humidity Control: Users can adjust the desired humidity level using control buttons. The display temporarily shows the set humidity before reverting to the current level.
  • Fan Speed Control: The fan speed can be set to either low or high, influencing the air volume and the rate of dehumidification. Indicator lights on the panel show the selected fan speed.
  • Timer Function: An automatic shut-off timer can be set for up to 12 hours in 1-hour increments. The "Timer On" light illuminates when this function is active. It's recommended to empty the water bucket before setting the timer, as dehumidification will stop if the bucket becomes full during the timed operation.
  • Safety Standby Light: A red "Safety Standby" light indicates that the product has been operating continuously for 23 hours. In this state, the fan and compressor shut off for one hour to prevent malfunction. After this hour, the light turns off, and the unit automatically restarts. This is a normal safety feature.
  • Bucket Full Light: This light illuminates when the drain water bucket is full, signaling that it needs to be emptied. After the light turns on, the fan continues to operate for an additional three minutes to clear any remaining condensed water before the product shuts off.
  • Auto Defrost Light: The "Auto Defrost" function automatically removes any frost that may form on the heat exchanger due to low indoor temperatures. The "Auto Defrost" light turns on during this process, and the compressor temporarily stops.
  • Continuous Drainage: For extended operation without needing to empty the water bucket, the dehumidifier can be set up for continuous drainage. This involves attaching a standard 3/4" threaded garden hose to a drainage adapter, which is then inserted into the hose opening at the back of the unit. The hose should lead to a nearby sink or drain. The product requires the water bucket to be installed even when using continuous drainage.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the dehumidifier's optimal performance and lifespan.

  • Cleaning the Exterior: The exterior of the dehumidifier should be wiped with a soft, damp cloth. It's important not to spray water directly onto the product to avoid damage or stains. A vacuum cleaner or soft brush can be used to remove dust from the filter case. Harsh cleaning agents like thinners, benzene, acid, or sponges should be avoided as they can damage the surface.
  • Emptying and Cleaning the Water Bucket: The water bucket needs to be emptied when the "Bucket Full" light turns on. To do this, gently pull the top handle to remove the bucket, lift off its cover, pour out the water, and then replace the cover. The water bucket should be cleaned once a week during use with a soft cloth to remove any remaining moisture. Care should be taken not to touch the water detection device inside the bucket storage area. If the bucket is removed while the product is operating, the compressor will stop, and the fan will run for three minutes to clear remaining water before shutting off.
  • Cleaning the Air Filter: The "Check Filter" light illuminates after 350 hours of operation, indicating that the air filter needs inspection and cleaning. To access the filter, release two hooks on the right side of the filter case and swing it open. The air filter can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner or a soft brush. If it's very dirty, it can be washed with water and a neutral detergent. The filter should be allowed to dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area before reinstallation to prevent product failure. After cleaning and reinstallation, the "Filter Reset" button should be pressed and held for three seconds to reset the operating time. The air filter should be cleaned at least once a month.
  • Storing the Product: For extended periods of non-use, the dehumidifier should be unplugged, the water bucket completely emptied and wiped dry, and the air filter cleaned and thoroughly dried. If continuous drainage was set up, the hose and adapter should be disconnected. The dehumidifier itself should be placed in a well-ventilated area, out of direct sunlight, to dry for several hours before storing it in an upright position with the filter and cover reinstalled.

The manual also includes important safety instructions, emphasizing the need to read all instructions before use, adhere to safety procedures during installation and operation, and avoid tampering with controls or using damaged components. It provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues, such as the product not running, insufficient dehumidification, or incorrect humidity readings, with corresponding possible causes and solutions.
