Overview

The Lifeloc FC5 Hornet is a new generation of alcohol screener designed for use in various safety-sensitive industries, including schools, police, probation, jails, and mining. This device simplifies alcohol testing by eliminating the need for mouthpieces or special attachments, making it user-friendly and efficient. Its design incorporates icons to overcome language barriers, ensuring clear communication of test results.

At its core, the FC5 Hornet is alcohol-specific, utilizing a platinum fuel cell that provides rapid response and reset times, contributing to a long working life for the device. A key safety feature is its ability to allow the operator to view test results without revealing the display to the subject, maintaining discretion and privacy.

The device offers three primary operating test modes: Subject, Ambient Air, and Open Container testing.

Function Description

The FC5 Hornet is a portable breath alcohol tester that measures the presence and levels of alcohol. It is designed for quick and easy operation, providing reliable results for screening purposes.

Usage Features

Getting Started:

To begin, the user simply presses the Power button momentarily. The FC5 Hornet will initiate a self-test and then display the POS/NEG test mode as the default. The device is designed to automatically power off after 5 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life.

Test Modes:

The FC5 Hornet offers three distinct test modes, which can be scrolled through using the Function button:

  1. POS+/- NEG Test Mode: This mode is ideal for zero-tolerance environments. Results are displayed as either "POS +" (any alcohol level > .000 BAC) or "NEG" (no alcohol detected). Tests are automatically triggered when the subject exhales sufficient breath towards the sampling cone. For uncooperative subjects or discrete ambient air testing, a manual override is available via the Execute button.

  2. LEVELS Test Mode: For more precise alcohol testing, this mode alerts the operator to specific levels of alcohol. It features automatic testing with manual override capabilities for challenging subjects. The pre-set alcohol levels are categorized as:

    • Zero: <.010% BAC (<.04 mg/l)
    • Low: .011 - .020% BAC (.05 - .09 mg/l)
    • High: >.021% BAC (>.100 mg/l) The display uses distinct icons to represent these levels, ensuring clear interpretation.
  3. OPEN CONTAINER Test Mode: This mode is designed to sample the air-space over open drink containers or spills. It employs a unique double pump action to ensure a sufficient test sample, even from small-neck bottles. One-button sample triggering allows for precise positioning over the sample, and the quiet pump action ensures discrete and unobtrusive sampling.

Conducting Tests:

  • Automatic Test:

    1. Position the sampling cone approximately 4 inches (10 cm) from the subject's mouth.
    2. Instruct the subject to blow steadily towards the cone.
    3. The test will automatically trigger once an adequate sample is provided.
    4. The results will be displayed and remain on screen for 30 seconds or until the Function button is pressed.
  • Manual Test:

    1. Position the sampling cone no less than 4 inches from the subject's mouth.
    2. Instruct the subject to blow steadily towards the cone.
    3. While the subject is blowing, press the Execute button to manually trigger the test.
    4. Results will be displayed for 30 seconds or until the Function button is pressed.
  • Open Container Test:

    1. Position the sampling cone no less than 4 inches from the container or sample.
    2. Press the Execute button to trigger the test.
    3. For optimal results, it is recommended to slightly agitate the sample prior to triggering the test.
    4. Results will be displayed for 30 seconds or until the Function button is pressed.
  • Ambient Air Test:

    1. In any of the three test modes, wave the unit in the air.
    2. Press the Execute button to trigger the test.
    3. Results will be displayed for 30 seconds or until the Function button is pressed.

User Prompts:

The FC5 Hornet uses clear icons and text prompts to guide the user:

  • "POS+/-NEG" indicates the POS/NEG Test Mode, where NEG results register as Zero and POS results are anything >0.
  • "- NEG" signifies negative results in POS/NEG Test Mode.
  • "POS +" signifies positive results in POS/NEG Test Mode.
  • A blowing icon with "BLOW" indicates the Levels Test Mode, showing results across Zero, Low, and High alcohol content.
  • Specific icons represent <.010% BAC, .011 - .020% BAC, and >.021% BAC in Levels Test Mode.
  • An icon of a mug with "+/- GO" indicates Open Container Test Mode, where NEG results register as Zero and POS results are anything >0.
  • A mug with a minus sign indicates negative results in Open Container Test Mode.
  • A mug with a plus sign indicates positive results in Open Container Test Mode.
  • An hourglass icon appears when the FC5 is in wait mode, which can occur while the device is recovering from a POS test.

Battery Installation:

The FC5 Hornet operates on 4 AA alkaline batteries. To install or change batteries, the protective grip must first be removed. The battery door is located on the lower back of the device and is removed by pressing in and down. Batteries should be installed according to the symbols in the battery case, and the door is closed by pushing up until it locks shut.

Precautions:

To ensure accurate results and prevent damage, users should observe the following precautions:

  • Wait at least 10 minutes after drinking, smoking, or inserting anything into the mouth before taking a breath test.
  • Avoid blowing smoke into the port, as this can damage the sensor.
  • The FC5 Hornet should be stored in temperatures between 32° - 130° F (0° - 55° C).
  • There are no user-serviceable parts inside the device; all servicing must be performed by an authorized FC5 technician.

Maintenance Features

Calibration:

To maintain accuracy, all breath testers, including the FC5 Hornet, require periodic calibration. It is recommended that the device be calibrated by a factory-certified calibration technician at least once every 12 months. For calibration or service, users can contact Lifeloc via email at service@lifeloc.com, visit their website at www.lifeloc.com, call 1.800.722.4872, or reach out to their local distributor.

General Maintenance:

For general upkeep, the unit should be wiped with a soft cloth sprayed with a non-abrasive disinfectant cleaner. To ensure the longest possible life for the FC5 Hornet, it is advised to perform two or three tests at least every 30 days. This practice helps prevent the fuel cell from drying out during extended periods of non-use. If service is required, the same contact methods as for calibration apply.
