Overview

This document outlines the assembly, usage, and maintenance of a Lifetime Basketball Equipment Backboard and Rim Combo, Model #73729. It emphasizes safety, proper installation, and customer support.

Function Description:

The Lifetime Basketball Equipment Backboard and Rim Combo, Model #73729, is designed to provide a durable and functional basketball system. It consists of a backboard and a rim, intended for recreational use. The backboard is designed to be mounted to a Lifetime Products® Pole Mounting Unit, a Universal Mounting Bracket, or other commercially available poles, provided they offer adequate support. The system allows for the attachment of a net (sold separately) to complete the basketball setup. The rim is designed to pivot, offering a degree of flexibility during play. The backboard itself is not intended for custom installations where direct mounting without a support plate is attempted, as this can lead to damage and void the warranty. The system is built to withstand regular use, but proper installation and maintenance are crucial for its longevity and safe operation.

Usage Features:

The assembly process for the Backboard and Rim Combo offers two primary options, depending on whether the accompanying Backboard Brackets include a U-Bolt. Option 1 is for use with Backboard Brackets and a U-Bolt, requiring the U-Bolt to be assembled to the Backboard Brackets according to the instructions provided with the pole or mounting bracket unit. Option 2 is for assembly without a U-Bolt. Both options involve laying the backboard on a flat surface, sliding carriage bolts into the backboard channels, and bending the backboard brackets to align with the carriage bolts. The nuts are initially hand-tightened and then fully tightened after the brackets are properly positioned.

The rim assembly involves sliding an axle through the rim and a rim pivot bracket, securing it with push nuts on both ends. Compression springs are then slid onto the legs of the U-Bolt or hex bolts, and nylock flange nuts are tightened until the rim achieves the desired tension. Finally, a rim cover plate is fastened to the rim using screws. The backboard also includes frame pads that overlap the front of the backboard, which are attached using self-drilling screws. It is crucial to align the small line on the back of the bottom frame pad with the seam in the backboard frame for proper installation.

The system is designed to be mounted to various structures. If mounting to a roof mount, wall mount, or existing pole mount that does not have an extension provided, a Universal Extension Bracket (Model #9594) is recommended. This bracket is available through Lifetime Products, Inc.® and allows for secure attachment of the backboard and rim to a pole, wall, or roof. The manual provides illustrations of these mounting configurations.

Maintenance Features:

Proper maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity and safe operation of the basketball system. The manufacturer emphasizes that the system is not intended for institutional or commercial use, and such use will void the warranty. Regular inspection of all components for wear, damage, or corrosion is recommended. Any signs of damage, especially to the backboard or rim, should be addressed promptly.

The warranty specifically excludes defects resulting from misuse, abuse, negligence, improper installation, alteration, or accident. It also does not cover damage caused by vandalism, rusting, "acts of nature," or any other event beyond the manufacturer's control. Scratching or scuffing from normal usage is not covered, nor are defects resulting from intentional damage, unreasonable use, or hanging from the net or rim.

In case of missing parts during initial inventory, customers are advised to contact the Customer Service Department. For assembly, it is recommended to test fit all bolts into their respective holes and carefully scrape away any excess powder coating buildup, ensuring not to remove all of it to prevent rust.

The manual strongly advises against mounting the rim directly to the backboard without a metal support plate behind it, as the strike plate on the backboard is not designed to hold the rim's weight. Failure to use a support plate will result in damage to the backboard and void the warranty. Support must also be provided at the top of the backboard using carriage bolts in the slots.

The product comes with a 5-year limited factory warranty, covering defects in material or workmanship from the date of original retail purchase. In the event of a defective component within the warranty terms, Lifetime Products, Inc. will repair or replace the parts at no cost to the purchaser. However, shipping charges and labor expenses for removal, installation, or replacement are the responsibility of the purchaser. All warranty claims must be accompanied by a dated sales receipt and, if possible, photographs of damaged parts. Customers are encouraged to register their product online to receive product notifications and to provide feedback.
