Overview

This document is an assembly and maintenance manual for the Lifetime Action Grip Basketball System, Model 90020. It provides detailed instructions for setting up the system, including site preparation, pole assembly, backboard and rim attachment, handle assembly, and final adjustments. The manual also includes important safety warnings, a list of required tools and hardware, and information on product registration and warranty.

Function Description:

The Lifetime Action Grip Basketball System, Model 90020, is a residential basketball hoop designed for outdoor use. It features an adjustable height mechanism, allowing players of various ages and skill levels to enjoy the game. The system is designed for permanent installation by cementing the pole into the ground, ensuring stability and durability. The "Action Grip" likely refers to the handle assembly that facilitates height adjustment.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Concrete Mix Requirement: Requires at least 420 lb (≈191 kg) of concrete mix to fill a volume of 3.07 ft³ (≈0.087 m³). This is crucial for securing the pole in the ground.
  • Cure Time: Requires at least 3 days for concrete to cure before continuing assembly. Quick-setting concrete may have different cure times, which should be checked on the bag.
  • Assembly Time: Approximately 3-4 hours to complete assembly steps after concrete curing.
  • Personnel Requirement: At least 3 people are recommended for setup due to the size and weight of components.
  • Minimum Operational Height: The bottom of the backboard must be at a minimum height of 6 ft 6 in (1.98m) for safe operation.
  • Hole Dimensions for Pole Installation: A round hole 21" (≈53.3 cm) deep and 18" (≈45.7 cm) in diameter is required. The edge of the hole should be flush with the playing surface. Local building codes should be consulted for proper hole depth in areas prone to frost heaves.
  • Pole Markings: The bottom pole (ALE) has a mark at 14.5" (≈36.8 cm) from its dimpled end, which must be flush with the playing surface after concrete is poured. The pole's edge should be 4" (≈10.2 cm) from the playing surface to ensure proper backboard overhang.
  • Pole Assembly Length: The assembled length of the middle and bottom poles should not exceed 83.5 in. (212.1 cm).
  • Hardware: Various hex bolts, washers, spacers, centerlock nuts, self-drilling screws, and T-nuts are used throughout assembly. Specific hardware bags (BCO, BCS, BCR, BCT) are provided for different sections.
  • Tools Required: The manual lists several tools, including:
    • Wrenches: 1/2" (≈13 mm), 3/8" (≈10 mm), 9/16" (≈14 mm), 3/4" (≈19 mm), 7/16" (≈11 mm)
    • Screwdriver
    • Drill (for self-drilling screws, or a 3/8" (10 mm) hex driver)
    • Scrap wood/cardboard (for seating poles)
    • Hammer/mallet (for seating poles)
    • Shovel
    • Level
    • Ladder (use with extreme caution)
  • Components: Key components include the backboard (AJI), rim (ALX), various pole sections (ALE, ALF, ALH), backboard brackets (AJJ, AJK), extension arms (AKC, AKB), handle assembly (AKI, AMN, APS, AQI), inner channel (AKQ), outer tube (ALB), channel stop (AJS), outer tube bushing (CNJ), height sticker (AKP), net (AKZ), and pole pad (ALN).

Usage Features:

  • Adjustable Height: The system incorporates a handle assembly (AKI) and an inner channel (AKQ) with a trigger mechanism (AMN) to adjust the height of the basketball hoop. The height sticker (AKP) provides visual guidance for setting the desired height, ranging from 7.5' to 10'.
  • Stability: The permanent in-ground installation with concrete ensures maximum stability during play.
  • Durability: Components are designed to withstand outdoor conditions, with maintenance instructions provided to prevent rust and wear.
  • Safety: The manual emphasizes safety throughout, with warnings against hanging from the rim, climbing on the pole/base, and improper assembly. It also recommends wearing a mouth guard during play and keeping hands clear of moving parts during height adjustment.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Hardware Check: All nuts and bolts should be checked frequently and tightened if loose.
  • Wear and Tear Inspection: All parts should be inspected for excessive wear and tear. Worn or damaged parts should be replaced immediately. Customer service can be contacted for replacement parts.
  • Warning Sticker Integrity: The warning sticker on the pole should be inspected monthly. If ripped, faded, or illegible, a replacement sticker should be requested from customer service.
  • Corrosion Prevention: Pole sections and all metal parts should be checked monthly for signs of rust, pitting, or chipped/cracked paint.
    1. Completely remove any rust or chipped paint with an emery cloth.
    2. Clean the area with a damp cloth and allow it to dry.
    3. Apply two coats of a rust preventative, high gloss enamel paint, allowing drying time between coats.
  • Immediate Replacement for Penetrating Rust: If rust has penetrated through the pole anywhere, the affected part must be replaced immediately.
  • Base Care: Keep water and organic material (grass, litter, etc.) away from the pole base to prevent corrosion and deterioration. The concrete should be sloped away from the pole to allow for water runoff.
  • Net Replacement: If a replacement net is needed, customer service should be contacted. Lifetime nets are designed to be shorter than average to reduce the risk of entanglement.
