Overview

This document provides installation instructions for Lithonia Lighting EDGR & EDGRNY Models, which are recessed edge-lit LED exit signs.

Function Description

These devices are designed as emergency exit signs, providing illuminated guidance in emergency situations. They feature LED lighting for energy efficiency and an edge-lit design for clear visibility. The units are available in standard and New York Approved models, with options for battery backup (EL models) and self-diagnostic capabilities. They can be installed in ceilings or walls using various mounting methods, including top mount for new installations and optional remodel bracket-mount or recessed box side hanger bar-mount for existing structures.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power Input: The units operate on 120/277 VAC for both AC-only and battery backup configurations. Dual circuit models are available for 120V and 277V applications.
  • Light Source: LED (Light Emitting Diode) for illumination.
  • Battery (EL Models): Requires no maintenance but should be tested periodically. It has a life expectancy of 5-7 years in normal ambient temperatures (72°F).
  • Mounting: Designed for recessed installation in ceilings or walls.
  • Adjustability: Features adjustable bar hangers (up to 2-ft) and adjusting slots (up to 1-in) for flexible positioning during installation.
  • Compliance: Must be tested monthly for 30 seconds and annually for 90 minutes in accordance with NFPA 101 (current life safety code). Local codes may have additional requirements.
  • Wiring: Utilizes quick connectors for the transformer and battery (EL models). Unused input leads must be properly insulated.
  • Operating Temperature: The battery life expectancy is based on a normal ambient temperature of 72°F.

Usage Features

  • Emergency Operation: In EL models, the battery provides power to the sign during AC power outages. The LED indicator turns RED when AC power is applied, signifying normal operation and battery charging.
  • Test Switch: A test switch (EL Model) allows for manual testing of the emergency function. Pushing the switch turns off the LED indicator and illuminates the EXIT section from battery power. Releasing the switch returns the unit to normal operation.
  • Chevron Requirements: The units allow for determination and application of directional chevrons using provided templates.
  • Self-Diagnostic (SD) Models: These models automatically perform periodic self-tests, reducing manual maintenance checks.
  • Installation Flexibility: Supports various installation scenarios:
    • New Installation (Top Mount): Involves positioning metal housing and bar hangers between joists, adjusting height, and making electrical connections.
    • Optional Remodel Bracket-Mount: Utilizes metal brackets, small screws, nuts, long screws, and screw holders for installation in existing drywall.
    • Recessed Box Side Hanger Bar-Mount: Involves knocking out a slot in the recessed box and installing hanger bars.
  • Visual Indicators: An LED indicator provides status information (e.g., RED for normal operation/charging).

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Maintenance: The battery is maintenance-free but requires periodic testing (monthly 30-second, annual 90-minute) and replacement when it no longer operates connected fixtures for the required duration.
  • Cleaning: The exit panel can be cleaned with a non-abrasive cloth and non-abrasive cleaner as needed.
  • Servicing: All servicing should be performed by a qualified service technician using only manufacturer-supplied replacement parts. Always turn off AC power to the equipment before servicing.
  • Initial Battery Charge: After continuous AC power is connected, the battery in EL models requires at least 24 hours to fully charge before normal operation takes effect. A 2-hour charge allows for a basic test of the sign's emergency function.
