Physical Installation
The XAP-810 access point is designed for simple and ecient installation and
can be located one of three ways. First, the included mount is designed to
attach directly to several dierent regions’ standard electrical boxes. Second,
the XAP-810 may be mounted on a ceiling or wall without a box by using the
included mount as a guide to mark attachment locations. Finally, the XAP-810
can be placed on a flat surface by attaching the included rubber feet
to the mount.
c Caution: Attach the rubber feet to the mount and attach the mount to
the AP for flat surface placement to avoid overheating and failure.
X
Single Access Point Placement: Because the signal generated by the
XAP-810 is omnidirectional, the unit should be located as near as possible to
the center of the desired coverage area.
XAP-810 Single AP Coverage Pattern
X
Multiple Access Point Placement: You may need to experiment with
AP placement to optimize the roaming experience. Place APs to ensure
adequate coverage, but not so far apart that there is no signal overlap.
Adjacent APs should overlap enough that the client device has a good
connection to the AP to which it is currently attached, but also sees the
next-nearest AP. Ideally, roaming clients should see signal strength of
two overlapping APs in the range of -60 to -70 dBm at the midway
point between two APs. To learn more about AP placement, visit

Connecting Ethernet and Power
Ethernet and Power
To apply power and network simultaneously, simply connect one end of an
Ethernet cable to a PoE switch, and the other end to the XAP-810 PoE port.
To connect power and Ethernet separately, first connect an Ethernet cable
from the supplied PoE Injector Data & PWR Out port to the PoE port on
the XAP-810. An Ethernet cable length of up to 300 feet can be used.

Overview

The Luxul XAP-810 is an AC1200 Dual-Band Wireless Access Point designed for creating or extending wireless networks, offering both 2.4GHz and 5GHz connectivity. It is particularly well-suited for environments requiring reliable and efficient wireless coverage. This device can function as a standalone access point or integrate seamlessly into a larger network managed by a Luxul Wireless Controller, providing enhanced configuration and deployment capabilities for multiple access points.

Function Description

The primary function of the XAP-810 is to provide wireless network access to client devices. It operates on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands, supporting the AC1200 standard for improved speed and performance. When integrated with a Luxul Wireless Controller, the XAP-810 enables centralized management and streamlined deployment of multiple access points, simplifying network setup and optimization. The device is designed to deliver omnidirectional signal coverage, making its placement crucial for maximizing the desired coverage area.

Usage Features

The XAP-810 offers flexible installation options to suit various environments. It can be mounted directly onto standard electrical boxes using the included mount, or it can be attached to a ceiling or wall without an electrical box by using the mount as a guide for marking attachment points. For flat surface placement, rubber feet can be attached to the mount, which then attaches to the AP, ensuring stability and preventing overheating.

For power and network connectivity, the XAP-810 supports Power over Ethernet (PoE). This means that a single Ethernet cable can provide both power and data, simplifying wiring and installation. Users can connect the AP directly to a PoE switch, or use the included PoE injector if a PoE-enabled switch is not available. The PoE injector has a "Data In" port for connecting to a router or non-PoE switch, and a "Data & PWR Out" port for connecting to the XAP-810's PoE port. An AC power cord is supplied for the PoE injector. Luxul recommends using at least Cat-5e unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cabling, with Cat6 UTP recommended for optimal performance at 1000 Mbps.

Initial setup and configuration of the XAP-810 are performed via a web-based interface. To access this interface, the device must first be connected to a network. This can be done by connecting a computer via an Ethernet cable to the same PoE switch or injector as the XAP-810, or by connecting wirelessly to the AP's default wireless network (Luxul_XAP810 or Luxul_XAP810_5G). The default wireless networks operate in Open Security mode, meaning no passphrase is required until wireless security is configured.

The default IP address for the XAP-810 is 192.168.0.10. If the network uses a different IP address scheme, users may need to temporarily set a static IP address on their computer within the 192.168.0.X range to access the AP's configuration interface. Once connected, users can log in to the web interface using the default username "admin" and password "admin" to configure network settings, wireless security, and other parameters. It's important to note that the XAP-810 is not a router and requires connection to a network with a router to provide Internet access.

The device features LED indicators to provide status information. A green Power LED indicates that the XAP-810 is powered and functioning; if it's off, the AP is not receiving power or the LED has been disabled in the web interface. A blinking green Power LED signifies that the XAP-810 is booting. Two blue LEDs indicate that the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks are configured and broadcasting. The PoE injector also has a PWR LED to indicate its power status.

For optimal wireless coverage, especially in multi-AP deployments, careful placement is advised. While the XAP-810 provides omnidirectional coverage, avoiding signal overlap that is too strong or too weak is key for seamless roaming. Ideally, client devices should experience signal strength between -60 to -70 dBm from two overlapping APs at the midway point. Tools like Ekahau HeatMapper can assist in visualizing and optimizing AP placement.

Maintenance Features

The XAP-810 includes a Reset button, conveniently located underneath the mount, which serves two primary maintenance functions. A quick press and release of the Reset button will reboot the AP, which can be useful for troubleshooting or refreshing network performance without power cycling the device. For more drastic measures, pressing and holding the Reset button for 10 seconds will restore the AP to its factory default settings. This action will erase all custom configurations, so it should be used with caution and only when necessary.

Regular firmware updates, while not explicitly detailed in the quick install guide, are typically available for such devices to improve performance, add features, and address security vulnerabilities. Users should consult the Luxul website for the latest firmware and instructions on how to apply updates.

Proper ventilation is crucial for the long-term reliability of the XAP-810. The device should be installed in a location with adequate airflow and ambient temperatures that meet equipment operation specifications. It should not be installed in hot or humid places, or where it might be exposed to excessive heat or moisture. The quick install guide also advises against installing the device where it could be exposed to flammable materials like paper or cloth, as the product can become hot during extended use.

For safety, the XAP-810 complies with FCC radiation exposure limits, requiring a minimum distance of 40cm between the radiator and the human body during normal operation. This distance should also be maintained during servicing or when selecting antenna locations. The device is designed for indoor use, particularly for the 5150-5250 MHz band, to mitigate potential interference with mobile satellite systems.

In summary, the Luxul XAP-810 is a versatile and user-friendly wireless access point, offering flexible installation, straightforward configuration, and essential maintenance features to ensure reliable and efficient wireless network performance.
