Do you have a question about the Makita HR004GZ and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Makita Cordless Combination Hammer, models HR001G, HR002G, HR003G, and HR004G, is a versatile power tool designed for a range of drilling and chiseling tasks. It is intended for hammer drilling in brick, concrete, and stone, as well as for chiseling work. Additionally, it is suitable for drilling without impact in wood, metal, ceramic, and plastic.

Function Description:

The tool operates as a cordless combination hammer, offering multiple action modes:

  • Rotation with hammering: For drilling in concrete, masonry, etc., using a tungsten-carbide tipped bit.
  • Hammering only: For chipping, scaling, or demolition operations, using accessories like bull points, cold chisels, or scaling chisels.
  • Rotation only: For drilling in wood, metal, or plastic materials, using twist drill bits or wood drill bits.

It features a reversing switch to change the direction of rotation (clockwise or counterclockwise) and a speed adjusting dial (marked 1 to 5) to control revolutions and blows per minute. The tool is equipped with a front lamp that illuminates the work area when the switch trigger is pulled, remaining on for approximately 10 seconds after release.

An optional dust collection system can be attached for cleaner operation, particularly when drilling in concrete. This system includes a dust case with a filter and a sealing cap. The tool also supports a wireless activation function (optional accessory) that allows it to connect and automatically run a compatible Makita vacuum cleaner when the tool's switch is operated, enhancing dust management.

Usage Features:

  • Battery Cartridge: The tool uses Makita's XGT batteries (BL4025/BL4040). An indicator on the battery cartridge shows the remaining capacity. The tool also features a tool/battery protection system that automatically cuts off power for overload, overheat, or overdischarge protection.
  • Switch Action: The tool is started by pulling the switch trigger, with speed increasing with pressure. The reversing switch allows for changing rotation direction, but only when the tool is completely stopped.
  • Speed Change: A dial adjusts the revolutions and blows per minute from 1 (lowest speed) to 5 (full speed).
  • Quick Change Chuck (for HR002G/HR004G): These models feature a quick change chuck for SDS-plus bits, which can be easily exchanged for a quick change drill chuck for other bit types.
  • Chisel Angle Adjustment: For chiseling, the chisel can be secured at various angles by rotating the action mode changing knob to the "O" symbol and then turning the chisel.
  • Depth Gauge: An optional depth gauge can be inserted into a hex hole to ensure uniform drilling depth.
  • Side Grip (Auxiliary Handle): An auxiliary handle is provided for safe operation and must be firmly secured.
  • Hook: A hook is integrated for temporarily hanging the tool. It should be lifted until it snaps into the open position for use and lowered when not in use.
  • Lanyard (Tether Strap): The hook can be used to connect a lanyard for working at height, ensuring the tool is tethered to a rigid structure.
  • Electronic Functions:
    • Constant speed control: Maintains consistent rotation speed regardless of load.
    • Active Feedback Sensing Technology (for HR001G/HR002G): Forcibly stops the motor if the tool is swung at a predetermined acceleration during operation to reduce wrist burden.
  • Wireless Activation Function (Optional): Allows the tool to wirelessly connect and operate a compatible Makita vacuum cleaner, synchronizing dust extraction with tool operation. This requires a wireless unit and a compatible vacuum cleaner. Tool registration procedures are outlined for linking the devices.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Maintenance: Always ensure the tool is switched off and the battery cartridge is removed before any inspection or maintenance. Avoid using gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol, or similar substances for cleaning to prevent discoloration, deformation, or cracks. Repairs and adjustments should be performed by Makita Authorized or Factory Service Centers using genuine Makita replacement parts.
  • Dust Case Filter: The filter in the optional dust case should be regularly cleaned by beating the dust on the filter inside the dust case to maintain vacuum efficiency. The filter can be removed and replaced when worn out or clogged.
  • Dust Case Sealing Cap: If the sealing cap of the dust case is worn out, it should be replaced to maintain dust collection performance.
  • Bit Grease: The shank end of drill bits should be coated with a small amount of grease before installation to ensure smooth action and longer service life.
  • Wireless Unit: Keep the wireless unit clean and dry. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures, static electricity, or corrosive gases. Ensure it is inserted correctly into the slot and the lid is closed. If the lid or slot is damaged, it should be replaced.
  • Screw Tightness: Under normal operation, the tool produces vibration, which can cause screws to loosen. Periodically check the tightness of all screws.
  • Cold Weather Operation: In cold weather or after long periods of disuse, operate the tool under no load for a while to warm up the lubrication and ensure proper hammering operation.
