Overview

The Manitowoc Arctic Pure™ Ice Machine - Water Filtration system is designed to improve the quality of water used in ice machines by reducing chlorine taste and odor, as well as sediment. The system utilizes activated carbon block technology and, in some models, Siliphos® for scale inhibition.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Arctic Pure™ system is to filter incoming water to remove contaminants that can affect the taste and odor of ice, and to prevent hard scale formation in ice machines. This is achieved through a multi-stage filtration process:

  • Prefiltration (AR-Pre): This initial stage provides 5-micron particle reduction, acting as an optional prefilter for areas with heavy dirt load. It helps to extend the life of finer downstream filters by removing larger sediment particles.
  • Chlorine Taste and Odor Reduction: The core of the system uses an activated carbon block. This block works through three mechanisms:
    • Adsorption: Contaminants are retained on the surface of the media, utilizing large pores within the carbon for maximum surface area.
    • Absorption: Contaminants physically migrate into the carbon media.
    • Catalytic Action: Contaminants chemically react with the carbon and are reduced in concentration.
  • Particle Reduction: The main filter cartridges (AR-10000, AR-20000, AR-40000) provide 1.0-micron particle reduction, ensuring fine sediment removal.
  • Scale Inhibition (Siliphos®): The AR-10000, AR-20000, and AR-40000 systems incorporate Siliphos® to inhibit hard scale formation. Siliphos® is built into the cartridges and dissolves into the water to prevent calcium and magnesium ions from adhering to surfaces.

Usage Features:

  • Quick Sizing Guide: Provides recommendations for specific ice machine models (Under counter Cubers, Modular Cubers, Flakers) to ensure proper filtration system selection.
  • Built-In Valve-in-Head: A key feature that provides a positive shut-off and vents the water line with a 1/4 turn of the cartridge. This eliminates the need for external shut-off valves and allows for "on-the-fly" cartridge changeouts without turning off the main water supply to the machine.
  • Ramped Cartridge Interconnect: This design ensures effortless cartridge change-outs. The ramped interconnect engages and disengages the cartridge o-rings completely from the head with a 1/4 turn, preventing leaks and simplifying maintenance.
  • Sanitary Quick Change Design: Assures continuance of filter specifications and reduces outside contamination by minimizing contact with the filter media during replacement.
  • John Guest Inlet/Outlets: Features 3/8" John Guest inlet/outlets with optional 3/8" stainless fittings for quick and easy installation.
  • Vent Hole with Tubing: Relieves water pressure during cartridge change out, directing depressurized water to a drain.
  • Patent-Protected Interconnect: The system's design protects the specification by ensuring that only correct replacement cartridges can be used, and the system cannot function without cartridges (non-bypassable).
  • Pressure Gauge: Allows for monitoring of water flow pressure. A red follower needle can be set to record the lowest water flow pressure when the filter system is in use, indicating when a cartridge change may be needed.
  • Compatibility: Works with copper or polyethylene tubing.
  • AR-40000 Specific: Features a powder-coated aluminum cover for durability and corrosion resistance.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cartridge Change Out: Filter cartridges need to be changed when:
    • The filter has trapped sediment, and water flow has stopped or is reduced below 20 psi (137.9 kPa).
    • The maximum life of the carbon filter has been reached, and it no longer reduces chlorine to acceptable levels.
    • The Siliphos® has completely dissolved, potentially accelerating hard scale formation.
  • Recommended Change Interval: It is recommended to change all filter cartridges every 6 months, or when the water flow through the cartridge is below 20 psi (137.9 kPa).
  • Installation Procedure: Detailed instructions are provided for mounting the filter system, ensuring proper spacing for cartridge change-out, and connecting water lines. Tubing must be high quality, exact size, round, and free of nicks or scratches for proper sealing.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Includes a table outlining common problems (no water flow, low water flow, water leaks), their causes, and corrective actions.
  • Warranty Card: Arctic Pure™ products come with a serial label that can be detached and adhered to an enclosed warranty card for submittal, requiring the user to fill out appropriate information and return it to Manitowoc.
