Usage Features:

The MD-19 offers intuitive control through its JOG dial, ENTER button, and EDIT button.

  • Basic Operations:

    • JOG dial: Changes parameters and modes.
    • ENTER button: Proceeds to the next step, finalizes input.
    • EDIT button: Reverts to the previous step, stops operations.
  • Playback and Recording:

    • Continuous Playback: Initiated from STOP state (servo all on).
    • Tracking and Sled Servo: ON/OFF toggle during continuous playback.
    • Stop: Stops continuous playback and recording (servo all off).
    • Sled Movement: Moves to outer or inner circumference when respective buttons are pressed.
    • Recording: Toggles recording ON/OFF during continuous playback.
  • Display Features:

    • DISPLAY button: Switches the display content in a sequence: Mode display, Error rate display, ADIP address display, Auto gain display, and IVR display.
    • Mode Display: Shows "TEMP ADJUST", "CPLAY MODE", etc.
    • Error Rate Display: Shows C1 error and ADER values.
    • Address Display: Shows MD groove address (e.g., "h=0000 a=0000").
    • Auto Gain Display: Shows Focus auto gain collection value (F) and Tracking auto gain collection value (T).
    • Other Displays: Indicators for continuous playback, tracking/sled servo status, recording mode, CLV lock state, pit mode, high/low reflection rate disc, spindle servo status, and ABCD adjustment status.

Maintenance Features (Service Mode):

The MD-19 includes a comprehensive service mode for adjustments and checks.

  • Accessing Service Mode:

    1. Ensure the unit is in STANDBY mode.
    2. Hold the STOP button, then press the POWER ON/STANDBY button, and finally the ENTER button. The display will show "Service Mode" for about 3 seconds.
  • Key Service Modes:

    • TEMP ADJUST: Temperature compensation offset adjustment.
    • LDPWR ADJUST: Laser power adjustment.
    • LDPWR CHECK: Laser power check.
    • EFBAL ADJUST: Traverse (E-F balance) adjustment.
    • FBIAS ADJUST: Focus bias adjustment.
    • FBIAS CHECK: Focus bias check.
    • CPLAY MODE: Continuous playback mode.
    • CREC MODE: Continuous recording mode.
    • EEP MODE: Non-volatile memory mode (not for servicing, exit immediately if entered).
  • Precautions in Service Mode:

    • Disc Handling: Loading operations function independently of service mode. Always ensure the disc is stopped before inserting or removing. The disc will not stop rotating during continuous playback/recording if the EJECT button is pressed. Press the EDIT button first to stop rotation, then EJECT.
    • Erase Protection: The erase-protection tab is not detected in service mode. Recording will proceed regardless of the tab's position, potentially erasing disc contents. Avoid continuous recording and traverse adjustment modes with discs you do not wish to erase.
    • Laser Diode Emission: Never view the laser diode directly from the top during adjustments to prevent eye damage.
    • Optical Pick-up (KMS-260A): The laser diode is sensitive to static electricity. Solder the laser tap of the flexible board when handling. De-solder before disconnecting connectors and be careful not to remove solder before connecting. Handle the flexible board with care as it breaks easily.
  • Adjustment Procedures (Refer to KMK-260 Service Manual for MD unit):

    • Temperature Compensation Offset Adjustment: Saves current temperature data as a 25°C reference in non-volatile memory. Typically not performed unless D101 is replaced. Ambient temperature should be 22-28°C.
    • Laser Power Adjustment: Involves setting the laser power meter on the objective lens and adjusting laser power to specified mW values (0.82-0.91 mW for 0.9 mW setting, 6.9-7.1 mW for 7.0 mW setting) using the JOG dial. Digital voltmeter connected to CN110 pin 5 (I+3 V) and CN110 pin 4 (IOP) is also used. Avoid continuous 7.0 mW emission for more than 15 seconds.
    • Traverse (E-F Balance) Adjustment: Adjusts waveforms on an oscilloscope connected to CN110 pin 3 (TEO) and CN110 pin 2 (VC) using a low reflection disc. Waveforms are adjusted to a specified A=B ratio. Note: Using a recorded disc will erase data.
    • Error Rate Check: Checks C1 error and ADER values using a high reflection disc (TMD-381) and a continuously recorded disc. C1 error should be below 20 (high reflection) or 50 (low reflection), and ADER should be 00.
    • Focus Bias Check: Checks focus tolerance by varying focus bias and observing C1 error and ADER values. C1 error should be below 50 and ADER 00 at the center, and below 220 and ADER 00 at the tolerance points.
  • Tools and Measuring Devices: Laser power meter (TQ8210), Optical sensor (TQ82017), Oscilloscope (with probe CAL).
