mAT-30 INSTRUCTIONS
Automatic antenna tuner
Thank you for choosing this MAT-TUNER product.
Please READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS carefully and completely before using this tuner.
IMPORTANT
NEVER touch the antenna or antenna connector with your hand when
the transmitter is transmitting, it will cause burns!
NEVER use the antenna tuner during a lightning storm. It may result in
an electric shock, cause a fire or damage the tuner. Always disconnect the
antenna before a storm.
NEVER operate the tuner with its cover removed. Contact with the
components inside the tuner while transmitting will result in painful RF
burns.
Always turn your transmitter off before plugging or unplugging
anything, otherwise it would be damaged.
The tuner is designed for indoor operation onlyit is not water resistant.
If you use it outdoors, you must protect it from rain, dew and steam.
We cannot guarantee the mAT-30 tuner will work well with those
transmitters which are released later than the tuner.
INTRODUCTION
The mAT-30 is an automatic antenna tuner specially designed for modern
Yaesu transmitters, the operating is the same as the Yaesu tuner, which is
simple and convenient. Yaesu transmitters will work well with mAT-30 tuners,
those works well with FC-30, FC-40, FC-50 tuners.
Tuner will match an amazing range of antennas and impedances, far greater
than some other tuners you may have considered, including the built-in tuners
on many transmitters.
mAT-30 tuner can only be used for Yaesu transmitter. Some early transmitters,
such as FT-80C, FT-757, can't use the mAT-30 tuner. The FT-817/818 will also
not work with the mAT-30. We have designed a dedicated mAT-10 tuner for
FT-817/818 transmitter, visit our website for relevant information. Web is

Overview

The MAT-30 is an automatic antenna tuner specifically designed for modern Yaesu transmitters, offering a simple and convenient operating experience similar to Yaesu's own tuners (FC-30, FC-40, FC-50). It is compatible with Yaesu 100W transmitters that work with these Yaesu tuners. The device is capable of matching a wide range of antennas and impedances, exceeding the capabilities of many other tuners, including those built into transmitters.

Function Description:

The MAT-30's primary function is to automatically tune antennas to achieve an optimum Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) for efficient radio transmission. It does this by adjusting internal coils and capacitors. The tuner stores tuning data in its memory for up to 16,000 channels, allowing for quick recall when the transmitter returns to a previously tuned frequency. Power for the tuner is supplied by the transmitter via the control cable (mAT-CY).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • RF Power: 120 watts SSB and CW peak power, 60 watts on PSK and digital modes, and 100 watts on 6 meters.
  • Frequency Range: 1.8 ~ 54 MHz.
  • Impedance Range: 5 ~ 1500 Ω.
  • Tune Time: 5 seconds or less.
  • Memories Channel: 16,000 channels.
  • Antenna Type: Compatible with dipoles, verticals, Vees, beams, wire, or any coax-fed antenna.
  • Power Supply: Provided by the transmitter via the control cable mAT-CY, with a maximum current of 0.5A.
  • Operating Temperature: -10°C ~ +50°C.
  • Case Size: 200mm (L) x 130mm (W) x 35mm (H).
  • Net Weight: 0.8Kg.
  • Gross Weight: 1.0Kg.

Usage Features:

The front panel of the MAT-30 is minimalist, featuring only two indicator lights:

  • ONLINE: Indicates whether the tuner is active (lights up) or in bypass mode (off).
  • POWER: Indicates power status.

The rear panel includes four connectors:

  • ANTENNA (SO-239): Connects to the antenna via a 50 ohm coaxial cable.
  • RF IN (SO-239): Connects to the transmitter's "ANT" socket via a 50 ohm coaxial cable.
  • GND: Connects to the antenna system ground.
  • RADIO (Mini DIN 8-pin): Connects to the transmitter's "tuner" socket via the supplied mAT-CY control cable. This cable also transmits control commands and power.

Installation Steps:

  1. Connect the transmitter's "ANT" jack to the tuner's "RF IN" jack using a 50 ohm coax cable (rated 120 watts or greater).
  2. Connect the mAT-CY control cable from the tuner's "RADIO" jack to the transmitter's "TUNER," "CAT/LINEAR," or "TUN/LIN" jack.
  3. Connect the antenna's coaxial cable to the tuner's "ANTENNA" socket.
  4. Grounding the tuner is recommended for enhanced performance and safety. A common ground rod connected to buried radials is preferred, but a single ground rod or a cold water pipe can suffice. The use of a properly installed, high-quality lightning arrestor on all antenna cables is strongly recommended.

Transmitter Settings (Example for FT-857D/897D):

Before using the MAT-30, specific menu settings on the Yaesu transmitter must be configured. For FT-857D/897D:

  1. Activate Menu mode by holding the F key for one second.
  2. Set Menu Mode No-001 [EXT MENU] to "ON."
  3. Set Menu Mode No-020 [CAT/LIN/TUN] to "TUNER."
  4. Save settings and exit by holding the F key for one second, then turn off the transmitter.
  5. Turn on the transmitter again, activate Menu mode.
  6. Set Menu Mode No-085 [TUNER/ATAS] to "TUNER."
  7. Save settings and exit.
  8. Recall Multi-Function Row "k"[TUNE, DOWN, UP] by pressing the F key as needed. For other Yaesu transmitters, refer to their respective operation manuals for external tuner settings.

Operation from the Transmitter:

  1. Recall Multi-Function Row "k"[TUNE, DOWN, UP] by pressing the F key.
  2. Turn on the mAT-30 by pressing the A key; "TUNE" will appear on the LCD.
  3. Initiate automatic tuning by pressing and holding the A key. The FT-857D will transmit a carrier signal, and the MAT-30 will adjust for optimum SWR. Once tuning is complete, transmission ceases, and the tuning data is stored in memory for future use on that frequency.

Maintenance Features:

  • Safety Precautions:
    • Never touch the antenna or antenna connector while the transmitter is transmitting to avoid burns.
    • Never use the tuner during a lightning storm; disconnect the antenna before a storm.
    • Never operate the tuner with its cover removed to prevent painful RF burns from contact with internal components during transmission.
    • Always turn off the transmitter before plugging or unplugging anything to prevent damage.
  • Environmental Considerations: The tuner is designed for indoor operation only and is not water-resistant. If used outdoors, it must be protected from rain, dew, and steam.
  • Compatibility: The MAT-30 is not compatible with some early Yaesu transmitters like FT-80C, FT-757, or the FT-817/818 (for which a dedicated mAT-10 tuner exists).
  • Disposal: The device is CE ENC and RoHS compliant. This material must be recycled and not thrown in the trash.

Attachments Provided:
