Overview

The MAXXFAN is a ventilation system designed for recreational vehicles (RVs), offering a range of models with varying features for optimal air circulation. It is designed to fit into a standard 14 by 14-inch RV roof opening, with a minimum roof thickness of 2 inches and a maximum of 6 1/2 inches. If the roof thickness is less than 2 inches, additional material can be added to the ceiling opening to ensure proper installation. The MAXXFAN requires a minimum 12 Volt DC, 5 amp service, and users should confirm that their existing circuit can accommodate this additional load, using proper gauge stranded wire for electrical connections.

Function Description:

The MAXXFAN provides ventilation by drawing air into or exhausting air from the RV cabin. Depending on the model, it can be operated manually or automatically. Manual opening models feature a knob to open and close the vent lid, which must be pulled to unlock before turning and pushed in to lock. Automatic opening models allow for the vent lid to close automatically in the event of RV power loss, and some models include a rain sensor that will automatically turn off the fan and close the lid if moisture is detected.

Many MAXXFAN models include a "Ceiling Fan Mode," which is activated by closing the vent lid while the fan motor is running. In this mode, the fan continues to run, circulating air within the RV cabin without drawing air from outside. This is particularly useful for maintaining internal air circulation.

The MAXXFAN also incorporates a self-resetting fuse on the circuit board located in the ceiling assembly. If the fan fails to operate or needs a reset, power can be removed and re-applied to reset the fuse.

Usage Features:

The MAXXFAN offers various control options depending on the model, including keypad controls, remote controls, and wall controls.

Keypad Controls:

Keypad controls are integrated into the ceiling assembly and allow users to turn the fan on and off, adjust fan speed, and, in some models, reverse the fan direction (intake/exhaust).

  • FAN ON/OFF: This button starts or stops the fan. On automatic opening models, it also opens or closes the lid. In Auto Mode, pressing this button will exit Auto Mode, turn off the fan, and close the lid.
  • Fan Speed Adjustment: Most models allow users to cycle through multiple fan speeds (e.g., four speeds on manual opening models, ten speeds on Plus models). Once the highest speed is reached, the fan cycles back to the lowest speed.
  • IN/OUT (Intake/Exhaust): On intake/exhaust models, this button reverses the fan direction. The fan will slow down and pause for two seconds before resuming operation in the opposite direction. In Auto Mode, the fan direction is automatically set to Exhaust but can be overridden.
  • AUTO Mode (Thermostat Control): Available on Plus models, Auto Mode allows the thermostat to turn the fan on and off based on a set temperature. The lid automatically opens and closes. The initial factory set point for the thermostat is 78°F, which can be adjusted using arrow keys. A green LED indicates when the MAXXFAN is in Auto Mode. If 12-volt RV power is removed, the thermostat will reset to 78°F.
  • Rain Sensor (Automatic Opening Models Only): This feature automatically turns off the fan and closes the lid if moisture is detected. A red LED will light to indicate deactivation, or blink if the sensor has shut the fan off. The rain sensor can be manually deactivated, but caution is advised to prevent rain entry.

Remote Control (Optional for Plus Models):

Remote controls offer convenient operation from anywhere within the RV.

  • FAN ON & POWER OFF: Starts or stops the fan, and exits Auto Mode.
  • VENT LID POSITION: Opens or closes the vent lid. In Manual Mode, pressing this button once closes the vent lid and enters "Ceiling Fan" Mode. This button is not active in Auto Mode.
  • AIR EXHAUST / INTAKE: Reverses the fan direction.
  • FAN AUTO MODE: Enters Auto Mode, allowing the fan lid to automatically open and the fan motor to operate based on the thermostat set point temperature. Exiting Auto Mode closes the vent lid and turns off the fan.
  • THERMOSTAT SET TEMPERATURE: Increases or decreases the set temperature for Auto Mode. The thermostat ranges from 29°F to 99°F (-2°C to 37°C). Holding both temperature keys simultaneously changes between Fahrenheit and Celsius.
  • FAN SPEED: Increases or decreases the fan speed, typically offering ten speeds.
  • Low Battery Indicator: Displays power bars to indicate battery charge level.
  • Transmission Signal: A symbol displayed on the screen when any button is pressed, indicating the signal was transmitted. A beep from the ceiling unit confirms signal reception.

Wall Controls (Optional):

Various wall control options are available, including 1-switch, 2-switch, 4-key, 5-key, and 6-key models, each offering different functionalities.

  • 1-Switch Wall Control (Manual Opening Models):
    • FAN 1-2-3: Turns the fan motor ON at the last selected speed and OPENS the Vent Lid. Cycles through LOW, MEDIUM, or HIGH speed.
    • FAN OFF: Turns the fan motor OFF.
  • 2-Switch Wall Control (Electric Opening Models):
    • FAN 1-2-3: Turns the fan motor ON at the last selected speed and OPENS the Vent Lid. Cycles through LOW, MEDIUM, or HIGH speed.
    • FAN OFF: Turns the fan motor OFF and CLOSES the Vent Lid.
    • VENT OPEN: OPENS the Vent Lid (fan motor remains in previous state).
    • VENT CLOSED: CLOSES the Vent Lid (fan motor remains in previous state; if fan is ON, enters Ceiling Fan Mode).
  • 4-Key Wall Control (Models 4751KS, 4951KS, optional for others):
    • FAN ON 1-2-3-4: Turns the fan motor ON at the last selected speed and OPENS the Vent Lid. Cycles through four fan speeds.
    • FAN OFF: Turns the fan motor OFF and CLOSES the Vent Lid.
    • VENT OPEN: OPENS the Vent Lid (fan motor remains in previous state).
    • VENT CLOSE: CLOSES the Vent Lid (fan motor remains in previous state; if fan is ON, enters Ceiling Fan Mode).
  • 5-Key Wall Control (Optional for Plus Models):
    • FAN ON/OFF: Turns fan ON/OFF and OPENS/CLOSES Vent Lid. Exits AUTO mode.
    • AUTO: Puts fan in AUTOMATIC thermostat mode.
    • +/- (Arrow Keys): Adjusts fan speed (10% to 100%) in Manual mode or thermostat set temperature (1°F increments) in AUTO mode.
    • OPEN/CLOSE: OPENS and CLOSES the motorized Vent Lid. Allows vent lid to be open or closed with fan motor on or off.
    • RAIN SENSOR: Turns OFF fan and CLOSES lid if rain is detected. Can be pressed to deactivate/reset the sensor.
  • 6-Key Wall Control (Optional for Plus Models):
    • Includes all features of the 5-Key Wall Control.
    • IN/OUT: Reverses fan motor for INTAKE or EXHAUST air direction.

Maintenance Features:

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of the MAXXFAN.

  • Cleaning: When cleaning the MAXXFAN, it is crucial to turn the fan OFF and remove the vehicle's 12-volt power. Only use a mild detergent solution for cleaning.
  • Insect Screen Removal: The insect screen is held in place by four retainer knobs. Rotate these knobs 1/2 turn to remove the screen for cleaning. Caution: Never operate the fan with the screen removed.
  • Sealant Compatibility: When installing the MAXXFAN, only use caulking/sealant compatible with the plastic flange and the roof surface. Avoid materials containing solvents such as Xylene, Toluene, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Acetate, or Acetone, as these can damage the flange. Polysulfide (Thiokol) type sealants must also be avoided.
  • Screw Tightening: When screwing the flange to the roof, ensure not to overtighten the screws to avoid cracking the flange. After installation, remove any excess butyl caulk and apply a daub of self-leveling lap sealant over exposed screw heads, and a bead along the outside edge of the flange.
