Safety
Occupant safety
This section will familiarise you with the
most importantfeatures of the restraint
systems in your vehicle.
In the event of an accident, your vehicle
may collide with another object, e.g. an-
other vehicle. This may result in rapidac-
celeration or deceleration of your vehicle.
During thisacceleration or deceleration,
thevehicle occupants will be moved to-
wards the force acting on the vehicle.
There is therefore the risk of vehicle occu-
pants injuringthemselves on the vehicle
interior or on partsofthe vehicle. Mutually
complementary restraint systems –inpar-
ticular seat belts, supplemented where
necessary by airbags–should minimise
theresultingrisk of injury.
However, seatbelts andairbags aregener-
ally unable to preventinjuriescaused by
objects penetratingthe vehiclefrom the
outside.
The most importantrestraintsystems are:
! Seatbelts
! Restraint systems forchildren, as they
are the most effective means of re-
straining occupant movement in the
event of an accident
Additionalprotection is provided by the:
! SRS system (SupplementalRestraint
System),comprising:
! An airbag
! Aroll-over bar
i An airbag increases the degree of protection
forvehicle occupantswearingaseatbeltand is
therefore to be considered only as an additional
restraint.Airbags in no wayreplace therequire-
mentfor allvehicleoccupants to wear theirseat
beltcorrectly at alltimes. This is because on the
one hand, an airbag is not deployedinall types
of accident, as in somesituations airbag deploy-
ment would notincrease the protectionafforded
to vehicle occupants, provided they arewearing
theseat beltscorrectly. On the other hand, air-
bag deployment only increases protectionfor
the occupant if theseatbeltiscorrectly fastened
because:
! the belt helps to hold the vehicleoccupant in
the best position in relation to the airbag
! it can significantly reduce the movement of
the vehicle occupant towards the forceof
the impact,e.g.inthe event of ahead-on col-
lision, and therefore reducethe risk of injury
