Why my MerCruiser Horizon 8.1 will not start?
    • S
      Susan HallAug 15, 2025
If your MerCruiser engine won't start or is hard to start, consider the following: * Check the lanyard stop switch. * Ensure you are following the correct starting procedure. * Verify there is sufficient fuel supply by filling the fuel tank or opening the valve. * Replace the fuel filter, in case it's clogged. * Drain the fuel tank and fill it with fresh fuel if the current fuel is stale or contaminated. * Replace any kinked fuel lines or blow out any lines that may be clogged with compressed air. * Check all wire connections. If these steps don't resolve the issue, the ignition system component may be faulty, or there may be an EFI system fault. In the case of EFI system fault, have it checked by an authorized Mercury MerCruiser dealer.

How to fix a MerCruiser Horizon 8.1 Engine that runs rough?
    • D
      Daniel TaylorAug 22, 2025
If your MerCruiser engine is running rough, missing, or backfiring, here are some possible causes and solutions: * Replace the fuel filter, as it may be clogged. * If the fuel is stale or contaminated, drain the tank and fill it with fresh fuel. * Replace any kinked fuel lines or blow out clogged lines with compressed air. * Clean the flame arrestor. If these steps don't solve the problem, the ignition system component may be faulty, or there may be an EFI system fault. In the case of EFI system fault or low idle speed, have it checked by an authorized Mercury MerCruiser dealer.

Why is my MerCruiser Horizon 8.1 having poor performance?
    • J
      Jeff GutierrezAug 26, 2025
If your MerCruiser engine is showing poor performance, consider these potential causes: * Inspect the throttle cable and linkages for proper operation, ensuring the throttle is fully open. * Replace the propeller if it is damaged or improper. * Drain excessive bilge water and check for the cause of entry. * Reduce the load or redistribute it more evenly if the boat is overloaded or the load is improperly distributed. * Clean the flame arrestor. * Clean or repair the boat bottom if it's fouled or damaged. For ignition problems or engine overheating, refer to the 'Engine Runs Rough, Misses or Backfires' or 'Excessive Engine Temperature' sections, respectively. If there is an EFI System fault, have it checked by an authorized Mercury MerCruiser dealer.

What causes low oil pressure in a MerCruiser Engine?
    • M
      Mrs. Karen DixonAug 28, 2025
Low oil pressure in your MerCruiser engine can be caused by: * Insufficient oil in the crankcase: Check and add oil. * Excessive oil in the crankcase (causing it to become aerated): Check and remove the required amount of oil and determine the cause of the excessive oil, such as improper filling. * Diluted or improper viscosity oil: Change the oil and oil filter, using the correct grade and viscosity oil. Determine the cause for dilution, such as excessive idling.
