should be removed en hloc from the cylinder head.
Apart from the un-
coupling of the exhaust pipe, petrol pipe, etc., it is only necessary to remove
the four retaining nuts to enahle both manifolds to he lifted clear.
After removal of the manifolds, dismantling may he continued 3s
follows
:-
Uncouple the oil delivery pipe from the cylinder head (near side
forward) by unscrewing the single retaining holt, and withdraw the
oil restrictor, to avoid risk of loss when the head is subsequently
removed.
Uncouple the oil return pipe at the
front
of the ,engine hy unscrewing
the two nuts only--it need not he withdrawn from its studs as it
will draw straight off when the head is lifted.
Remove bodily the oil return pipe at the
rcnr
of the ,engine hy un-
screwing thme retaining nuts nt top and bottom, taking car'e not to
lose the washers.
Release top
wat,er connection hy removing the two attachment holts,
taking care not to lose the washer.
Between the projecting portion
of
the cylinder h'ead hlock and the
dynamo will be found a circular flexihle coupling.
Remove the two bolts
which attach it to the dynamo drive yoke.
This will permit the flexible
coupling to he withdrawn with the cylinder hsead.
The cylinder head is held on to the cylinder hlock hy ten nuts screwed
on to th,e long studs passing through the cylinder head.
Slacken off these
nuts in rotation, half
a
turn at a time, until they are quite loose, then finally
rcemove them. It is unwise to unscrew any one of these nuts completely
hefore slackening
off
the remainder, as this will impose uneven stress upon
the cylinder head, leading to its distortion.
The cylinder head is now ready to he lifted from the cylinder hlock.
The breaking of the joint hetween the two will he facilitated hy smartly
tapping the sides of the head with a wooden mallet or with a
hammer with
a piece of wood
int'erposed to take the hlow. 'The joint may, however, not
hreak freely, in which case it is permisaihle to insert a screwdriver or similar
hlunt wedge-shaped tool hetween the joint at the two place-one on either
side
of
the engine-where the cylinder head gasket has been cut away for
the purpose. Do not insert the screwdriver too far.
It
should on no
account he forced against the gasket, which would hecome dam:lged as a
result.
When the joint is hroken no difficulty should be experienced in
lifting the head clear of the studs providing it is withdrawn squarely.
Place
the head on a bench out of
harm's way, and carefully lift the copper asbestos
gasket straight off the cylinder head studs, keeping it parallel with the upper
face of the cylinder head hlock and taking particular care that it is not bent
or otherwis'e damaged in the process.
Decarbonising.
Everything is now in readiness for decarhonising the
piston crowns and the surrounding face of the cylinder hlock.
Turn
th,e
engine by the starting handle until any two pistons are at the top of their
trav'el, whmen
it
will be found that the remaining two are at the hottom of
their cylinders. Stuff the open ends of these cylinders with clean rag, and
with an old screwdriver, or some hlunt tool, scrape the hlnck deposit off the
