Why is the range so short on my Midland Two-Way Radio?
    • W
      weaverwilliamJul 28, 2025
If your Midland Two-Way Radio displays a short range, this may be due to operating the radio from inside a vehicle or a metal building. If possible, operate outside of vehicles or buildings. Also, carrying the radio so that the antenna is very near the body will decrease the range, so hold the radio in the open for the best range. Finally, the battery condition can affect range, so replace or recharge the batteries.

If your Midland Two-Way Radio isn't receiving messages, ensure the volume is high enough. Also, confirm that all radios are set to the same channel and CTCSS/DCS code settings. Your location may be the issue, so try moving to ensure you are in range. Check and properly install or replace the batteries. Be aware that buildings, obstructions, or being indoors or in a vehicle can interfere with communication, so try changing your location. Finally, ensure your radio isn't transmitting, which can happen if it's in VOX mode or if accessories aren't properly set.

Make sure that radios are at least 5 feet apart. Also, be aware that obstacles interfere with transmissions and the talk range is up to 4 miles in unobstructed, clear areas.

If the charger for your Midland Two-Way Radio is not functioning, check that the charger is fully inserted into the jack on the bottom of the radio. If using the drop-in charger, check the contacts on the bottom of the radio, they may require cleaning. If all is correct allow the batteries to charge for the specified time. Ensure the outlet the charger is plugged into is functioning properly. Check that the batteries are installed in the radio properly. You can also try removing the batteries from the radio and charging them separately.
