Overview

The Miele S 280i Vacuum Cleaner is a household appliance designed for various cleaning tasks, featuring a range of accessories and operational modes to suit different surfaces and cleaning needs.

Function Description:

The Miele S 280i is a canister vacuum cleaner primarily used for dry vacuuming. It is equipped with an electronic suction selector that allows for both manual and automatic adjustment of suction power, optimizing performance for different carpet piles and flooring types. The vacuum cleaner can also function as a blower, which is useful for unclogging the hose or for intensive blowing actions when the enclosed blower plate is used.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Source: Operates on 120 V/60 Hz, requiring a 10 or 15 A fused receptacle.
  • Filtration System: Features a three-filter system for efficient suction and air cleaning:
    • Dustbag (paper filter bag)
    • Dust compartment filter
    • Exhaust filter (Miele Super Air Clean filter)
  • Dustbag Type: Uses genuine MIELE double-layer dustbags, with a closing flap that automatically seals upon removal to prevent dust escape.
  • Cord Length: The power cord can extend up to a maximum of 21 ft. and features an automatic rewind mechanism.
  • Safety Features: Includes a thermostatic control that automatically shuts off the vacuum cleaner if it overheats due to issues like a clogged hose, soiled dust compartment, or a full dustbag. It also has an overheating warning light.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The suction hose connects to the vacuum cleaner by inserting the "elbow" hose coupler until it snaps into position. Disconnection is achieved by pressing a locking button. The telescopic suction wand connects to the hand grip of the suction hose and can be adjusted in length to suit the user's height.
  • Floor Nozzles:
    • Standard Floor Nozzle: Recommended for routine cleaning of rugs, carpeting, and bare flooring (parquet, tile, linoleum, stone). It can be adjusted for different flooring types; depressing a symbol protrudes the brush for bare floors, while depressing another symbol retracts it for rugs and carpeting.
    • Turbobrush S 021 (Optional Extra): Recommended for deep-cleaning and restoring crushed carpet pile on low-nap carpeting. It is mechanically driven by the vacuum cleaner's suction power.
    • Floor Brush (Optional Extra): Designed for cleaning hardwood, stone, or PVC floors.
  • Accessories: Comes standard with a three-piece set of accessories stored in a recessed caddy:
    • Crevice Tool: For cleaning folds, crevices, and corners.
    • Upholstery Nozzle: For cleaning upholstery, mattresses, cushions, curtains, and clothing.
    • Dusting Brush: For cleaning skirting boards, ornate or carved articles. Its head can be swiveled for optimal cleaning.
    • Radiator Brush (Optional Extra): For cleaning radiators, narrow shelves, or crevices, fitting onto the crevice nozzle.
    • Universal Brush (Optional Extra): For dusting shelves, bookcases, etc.
  • Suction Control:
    • On/Off Switch: Activated by a foot switch.
    • Electronic Suction Selector: Offers 5 manual settings and an automatic setting ("A").
      • Manual settings include symbols for drapes/textiles, furniture/pillows, energy saving/daily cleaning, quality carpeting/Oriental rugs, and hardwood floors/deep-cleaning of carpeting & floors.
      • The automatic setting ("A") adapts suction power to various carpet piles and floors.
    • Air Inlet Valve (Suction Regulator): Located on the hand-piece, it allows for quick and easy reduction of suction power, useful for cleaning curtains, drapes, or lightweight area rugs to prevent them from being sucked up. It should remain closed when in "automatic" suction mode for proper electronic regulation.
  • Portability & Storage:
    • Wand Holder: A retractable wand holder allows the entire wand (including nozzle) to be attached to the canister for easy transportation and storage in a vertical position.
    • Park System: A special parking attachment on the floor nozzle and the cleaner's nose allows for convenient parking during pauses.

Maintenance Features:

  • Dustbag Change Indicator: A red mark in a window indicates when the dustbag needs changing. It reacts to the air porosity of the dustbag, meaning it might indicate "full" with fine dust even if the bag isn't physically full, or "half full" with fluff and hair even if bulging. It's recommended to check with the floor nozzle attached for accurate readings.
  • Replacing Dustbags: The paper dustbag has a self-closing flap. To remove, grasp the card collar by the finger holes and pull it out. Insert a new dustbag collar securely into the frame, ensuring it's not trapped when closing the dust compartment lid.
  • Filter Replacement:
    • Dustbag: Change when the indicator shows full or under specific conditions (e.g., vacuuming sand).
    • Exhaust Filter (Miele Super Air Clean Filter): Change every time a new pack of Miele paper filter bags is opened. A new filter is included in each pack. To replace, grasp the clean section of the old filter from the filter frame, remove, and insert a new one (can be inserted either way up).
    • Dust Compartment Filter: Change when it becomes very dirty, which can happen if the dustbag is damaged and leaks. To change, open the frame, remove the old filter, place the new one, and flip the frame back until it clicks.
  • Fiber Catcher Maintenance: Inspect the fiber catcher in the floor attachment's mouthpiece periodically. If worn, replace it by removing the old one from its slots with a dull knife or screwdriver and fitting a new one.
  • Floor Roller Servicing: If hair, lint, and fluff become trapped in the floor attachment's roller, lift the axle handle, slide out the axle, lift out the roller, remove foreign material, and then reassemble.
  • General Cleaning: The vacuum cleaner and attachments can be cleaned with a damp cloth or mild plastic cleaner. The electro suction wand should not be immersed in water. The dust compartment can be cleaned with a dry duster, dusting brush, or by using a second vacuum cleaner to suck or blow out dust.
