The Moccamaster KM5 Burr Coffee Grinder is a premium coffee grinder designed for home use, continuing a legacy of industry-leading quality established by Technivorm founder Gerard Clement Smit in 1965. Its precision engineering allows users to grind coffee beans to an exact, uniform size, which, when combined with Moccamaster coffee brewers' optimal temperature and brewing time, ensures perfectly crafted grinds that burst with flavor and freshness. This commitment to quality means users can taste the entire journey of their coffee, from origin to roaster to extraction, starting with the perfect grind.
The KM5 Moccamaster Grinder is designed for ease of use and optimal performance. To get started, users should place the Glass Grounds Container Lid (F) in position and then place the Glass Grounds Container (E) underneath the Dispensing Spout (H). The Bean Hopper (B) should be filled with coffee beans, and the Bean Hopper Lid (A) placed on top. The Power Plug (C) is then inserted into a grounded outlet. To begin grinding, the Power Switch (D) is pressed and held until the desired amount of coffee is ground. It's important not to overfill the glass grounds container past the bottom of the Moccamaster logo (approximately 110 grams) to prevent the grinder motor from jamming. Once grinding is complete, the Glass Grounds Container is removed from underneath the Dispensing Spout, and its lid is taken off. Users can then measure or weigh their grounds and transfer them to their brew basket or coffee brewer. For any leftover grounds, the container can be sealed with the Storage Lid (G).
Adjusting the grind setting is straightforward with the KM5. The adjustment knob allows for grind sizes ranging from fine (1) to coarse (9). For Moccamaster coffee brewers, the ECBC-approved setting of 5 is recommended as a starting point. Grinding below setting 4 is not advised for Moccamaster brewers, as a finer grind size may negatively affect the flavor of the brew and machine performance. For first use, the adjustment knob should be set to 5. For subsequent uses, the power switch should always be activated before adjusting the grind setting. This clears any partially ground beans from previous use, preventing the motor from jamming if bean remnants are trapped in the burrs. With the grinder running, rotating the Adjustment Knob (J) clockwise produces a finer grind, while rotating it counterclockwise produces a coarser grind.
The KM5 Moccamaster Grinder is built with sustainability in mind. It is recyclable, repairable, cleanable, and designed to be sustainable. It is handmade in the Netherlands since 1964, reflecting a long-standing tradition of craftsmanship. The grinder also comes with an industry-leading 5-year warranty. Furthermore, the KM5 is industry-certified for optimal performance, certified by the European Coffee Brewing Center (ECBC) to grind to strict standards. This certification is awarded only after rigorous quality control and laboratory testing.
For optimal coffee, Moccamaster recommends using fresh beans, grinding them right before brewing, and only the amount needed. If more is ground, it can be stored in the grinder's glass grounds container with the storage lid. Dialing in the grind is crucial; coffee grounds that are too fine can lead to an over-extracted cup, while too coarse can result in weak or flavorless coffee. Medium-coarse is recommended for brewing on a Moccamaster, with users encouraged to experiment with small adjustments to find their perfect grind. Keeping the grinder clean is also important; if not used daily, old grounds should be cleared before grinding a fresh batch by pre-grinding a small amount of coffee and discarding it. Water quality also impacts coffee flavor; fresh tap, filtered, or bottled water is recommended. Reverse osmosis filtered water or distilled water is not recommended as it can damage the brewer's boiling element and lacks necessary minerals. The recommended coffee-to-water ratio is 2 tablespoons of ground coffee to every 6 ounces of water, or 55 grams per liter, which is the industry standard for optimal flavor. Users can adjust this ratio to suit their taste preferences.
Maintaining the Moccamaster KM5 Burr Coffee Grinder ensures its longevity and consistent performance. Basic cleaning involves unplugging the grinder before wiping the inside surfaces of the bean hopper with a moist cloth at least once a week to prevent coffee oil build-up and discoloration. Exterior surfaces can also be cleaned with a moist cloth as needed and wiped dry. It is crucial not to use any cleaning agents on the interior or exterior of the grinder and never to wash any grinder parts in the dishwasher. Rice should also not be used to clean the grinder.
For more thorough maintenance, it is recommended to clean the inside of the grinder every 3-6 months, depending on coffee type and grinding frequency. Darker roasts, being oilier, tend to stick more easily, and irregular cleaning can negatively impact the flavor of ground coffee. The inside of the grinder can be cleaned manually or automatically using a dedicated coffee grinder cleaning product. For manual cleaning, users can refer to the Burr Replacement instructions on the Moccamaster website to learn how to disassemble the grinder. A soft brush and a vacuum cleaner are recommended for cleaning the grinding chamber. For automatic cleaning, a grinder cleaning product suitable for burr grinders, such as Biocaf Coffee Grinder Cleaning Tablets by Urnex, can be used by following the manufacturer's directions on the packaging. These products remove coffee oils and particles without disassembly.
The grinder has a maximum operation time of 1 minute at a time. After use, it should be allowed to rest for 15 minutes to cool down to room temperature before the next batch. This ensures proper operation and prevents overheating. The glass grounds container should not be filled past the bottom of the Moccamaster logo to prevent clogging the dispensing spout and jamming the motor. All lids must be placed in the correct position as shown in the manual. The grinder is not dishwasher safe.
In terms of environmental recommendations, filters and coffee grounds should be disposed of in an organic waste container or compost heap where available. If not, they can be disposed of in normal household waste. All packaging and parts should be recycled responsibly.
Replacement parts are readily available through many retailers, online at www.moccamaster.com, or by contacting Consumer Relations at 855.662.2200. This ensures that the grinder can be maintained and repaired, extending its lifespan.
