Overview

This document serves as the operating manual for Mowox cordless lawnmowers, specifically covering models EM 4140 PX(-Li), EM 4640 PX(-Li), EM 4640 SX(-Li), and EM 5140 SX(-2Li). It provides essential information for safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and disposal.

Function Description

The Mowox cordless lawnmower is designed for private home and garden use, specifically for maintaining small, private lawns and hobby gardens. It is not intended for commercial or industrial applications, public facilities, sports fields, or agricultural/forestry use. The device is a battery-powered lawnmower, with some models (SX-Li) including a battery and charger. It is capable of cutting grass and, in certain configurations, mulching, side ejection, or rear ejection of clippings. The lawnmower features a height adjustment lever for varying cutting heights and a main power switch for operation. Some models include a clutch lever for rear-wheel drive.

All models feature a height adjustment range of 25-75 mm with 7 settings. Sound pressure levels at the user's position range from 77.3 dB(A) to 80.3 dB(A) with a K-value of 3 dB(A). Measured sound power levels (LWA) are between 88.0 dB(A) and 92.5 dB(A), with guaranteed sound power levels (LWA G) of 92 dB(A) or 98 dB(A). Maximum vibration values are between 0.68 m/s² and 2.35 m/s² with a K-value of 1.5 m/s². Some models (SX-Li) come with a BC 82 or BC 85 battery charger and a BA 154 battery. The device is protection class 2 and is protected against vertically dripping water (IPX4).

Usage Features

The lawnmower is designed for ease of use and adaptability.

  • Assembly: The handle consists of a lower and upper part, connected with screws, washers, and flower-shaped knobs. Cable clamps are provided to secure the hoist and electrical cable.
  • Handle Adjustment: The inclination angle of the lower handle part can be adjusted to suit the operator's body size, with three height settings available.
  • Grass Collection Bag: The mesh of the grass bag must be securely attached to all edges of the frame. A plastic flap on the upper part of the bag acts as a fill-level indicator.
  • Battery Insertion/Removal: The battery is inserted into the battery holder under a cover until it audibly locks. Removal involves lifting the cover and pressing a latch button on the battery pack.
  • Mowing Height Adjustment: A single lever on the right rear wheel allows for quick adjustment of the cutting height across all four wheels.
  • Starting the Motor: To prevent accidental starts, the device has an engine brake that must be retracted. The main power switch (under the battery compartment lid) and the on/off button must be pressed. The brake lever must be held during operation.
  • Rear Wheel Drive (SX models): A clutch handle activates the rear-wheel drive, propelling the mower forward at a non-variable speed of 3-4 km/h. Releasing the lever disengages the traction.
  • Optimal Mowing Results: It is recommended to remove foreign objects from the lawn, avoid mowing wet grass, and shorten grass by a maximum of 1/3 of its length. For tall grass, two passes with a reduced blade height are suggested. The underside of the housing should be cleaned after each use to prevent mulching hindrance.
  • Multi-Functionality (2-in-1, 3-in-1, 4-in-1): Depending on the model, the lawnmower can be configured for mulching, side ejection, or rear ejection.
    • Mulching: Grass is finely chopped and returned to the lawn as fertilizer. This function is used when grass is not too high, and the grass basket is not needed.
    • Side Ejection: Clippings are neither collected nor mulched. This is the fastest way to cut grass.
    • Rear Ejection: Similar to side ejection, clippings are not collected or mulched.
    • Conversion: Before switching between functions, the brake handle must be released, and the device stopped.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for safe, economical, and trouble-free operation.

  • Safety First: Always remove the battery before performing any work on the machine or blade. Keep hands and feet away from rotating parts.
  • Maintenance Schedule:
    • After each use: Clean the mower, check all screws and the blade for tightness.
    • At least once a year: Lubricate all moving parts (wheels, wire rope hoists).
    • As soon as the blade is blunt: Sharpen or replace the blade.
    • Before winter storage: Apply grease/oil to the blade and all moving parts.
  • Cleaning: Do not spray the device with water, as this can damage electronic circuits and cause fire or electric shock. The underside of the housing should be cleaned after each use to remove grass residues and dirt, which can cause rust and corrosion. Tilt the mower and brush it from below.
  • Mower Blade: Regularly check all nuts and bolts for correct torque. Inspect the blade and blade support for cracks, especially after hitting an object. Replace if necessary. The blade wears out over time and should be reground or replaced. Always wear sturdy work gloves when handling the blade.
    • Loosening: Tilt the mower, jam the blade with a wooden slat, and remove the hexagonal screw and washer. A torque wrench may be needed.
    • Sharpening: Remove the blade and sand or file it, maintaining the original bevel. Ensure all sides are ground evenly to avoid imbalances, which can cause excessive vibration. Test balance on a screwdriver handle.
    • Replacement: Use only manufacturer-approved parts. Refer to the technical specifications for the correct blade type.
    • Installation: Position the blade with the embossed marking facing downwards. Align the washer and install the hexagonal screw, tightening to 50 Nm.
  • Wheels and Moving Parts: Lubricate all moving parts with light oil at least once a season. Tighten all bolts and nuts, especially in the area of wire rope hoists. Coat metal surfaces with spray oil or silicone spray to prevent rust.
  • Storage (Out of Season): Clean and oil the mower thoroughly. Lightly lubricate the blade. Store the mower in a dry, clean, and frost-proof place inaccessible to unauthorized persons. If storing in an unventilated room or garden shed, protect against rust. Avoid bending cables.
  • Battery Storage: Remove the battery from the mower after use and recharge it. Then remove it from the charger and store it separately in a cool, dry place. Failure to do so can lead to irreparable deep discharge.
  • Upright Storage: The mower can be stored vertically against a wall to save space. This involves reversing the handle assembly steps.

Troubleshooting

The manual includes a troubleshooting guide for common issues:

  • Motor does not run: Check battery seating, safety switches, grass length (increase cutting height), and for blocked blades (remove battery, check ejection openings, lift front wheels when starting). If overheating, let the motor cool down.
  • Motor runs faster/intermittently: Normal for tough, compact grass (motor speed increases under high load).
  • Motor stalls: Due to too high/compact grass or a blocked blade. Take less grass into the mower's working width.
  • Grass catcher not filled: Grass may be too wet; allow the lawn to dry.
  • Machine leaves ragged finish: Mower blade is blunt or damaged; resharpen or replace.
  • Wheel drive does not function: Check drive belt/gears; repair if necessary.

Warranty and Disposal

Mowox products come with a 24-month warranty for gardening machines and a 12-month warranty for batteries, covering material or manufacturing defects. Wear parts, damage from improper operation, external influences, modifications, and commercial use are not covered. Batteries are subject to natural wear; proper storage (10-15°C, dry, charged every three months) extends life. Proof of sale is required for warranty claims.

The device, battery, and charger must be disposed of separately from normal household waste, following local and national regulations. Contacts should be taped when disposing of batteries to prevent short circuits. Rechargeable batteries are preferred over disposable ones.
