      Erratic engine performance in your MTD Lawn Mower can stem from a few common issues. Start by checking the spark plug boot to ensure it's firmly connected and tightened. A blocked fuel line or stale fuel can also cause problems; clean the fuel line and refill the tank with fresh gasoline. Make sure the vent in the gas cap isn't plugged. Additionally, water or dirt in the fuel system can lead to erratic running, so drain the fuel tank and refill it with fresh fuel. If the air cleaner is dirty, refer to the engine manual for cleaning instructions. Finally, ensure the choke is in the “OFF” position if your unit is equipped with one.

      To solve the problem of engine fails to start, you should engage blade control. Also connect wire to spark boot. Fill tank with clean, fresh gasoline. Prime engine as instructed in the Operation section. Clean, adjust gap, or replace faulty spark plug. Clean fuel line. Wait a few minutes to restart, but do not prime if engine flooded. Open fuel valve, see engine manual. Choke engine, see engine manual. Replace burnt fuse, see Maintenance Section.
