  An MTD Lawn Mower engine might run erratically if the choke is activated, so move the throttle control out of the CHOKE position. Check and tighten the spark plug wire. A blocked fuel line or stale fuel can also cause this, so clean the fuel line, fill the tank with clean, fresh gasoline, and replace the fuel filter if equipped. Additionally, ensure the vent in the gas cap isn't plugged; clear it or replace the cap if damaged. Finally, water or dirt in the fuel system can be a culprit, so drain the fuel tank and refill with clean, fresh gasoline. Also check the air filter. If it is dirty, replace the air cleaner paper element or clean foam precleaner.
