Warning: This unit is equipped with an internal combustion engine and should not be used on or near any unimproved forest-covered, brush-
covered or grass-covered land unless the engine’s exhaust system is equipped with a spark arrester meeting applicable local or state laws (if any).
If a spark arrester is used, it should be maintained in effective working order by the operator. In the State of California the above is required by law
(Section 4442 of the California Public Resources Code). Other states may have similar laws. Federal laws apply on federal lands. A spark arrester

      Your MTD Lawn Mower engine might fail to start due to several reasons: the blade control may be disengaged (engage the blade control); the spark plug wire may be disconnected (connect the wire to the spark plug); the fuel tank may be empty or contain stale fuel (fill the tank with clean, fresh gasoline); the engine may not be primed (prime the engine as instructed); the spark plug may be faulty (clean, adjust gap, or replace it); the fuel line may be blocked (clean the fuel line); the engine may be flooded (wait a few minutes to restart, but do not prime); the fuel valve may be closed (open the fuel valve); or the engine may not be choked (choke the engine).

      An MTD Lawn Mower engine may run erratically if the spark plug wire is loose (connect and tighten it), the fuel line is blocked or the fuel is stale (clean the fuel line and fill the tank with fresh gasoline), the vent in the gas cap is plugged (clear the vent), or there's water or dirt in the fuel system (drain the fuel tank and refill with fresh fuel). For dirty air cleaner or carburetor out of adjustment, please refer to the engine manual.
