Lift and Centre
ol Gravity
at
different speeds.
We must
point
out,
however,
that this
method
represents
a fine
-tuning
procedure'
and
it
will fail completely
if
you
have
made
gross
errors
in cons-
truction,
or iI the
average CG
position
shown
has not been
ad-
hered
to.
Place the
model
in a steep dive
(about
50
degrees)
by holding
in
down
-
elevator
for two or
three seconds.
Release the
stick.
lf
the
model
is balanced
correctly,
it will
recover
from the dive
by
itself
in a broad,
gentle
curve.
lf the
model immediately
balloons
up
when
you
release the
stick, then
the CG
is too
far forward
Land the
model. remove
nose ballast,
and
apply a
little down
elevator
trim.
It the
model shows
no tendency to
recover
lrom the dive
at all
-
the dive
may even tend
to
get
steeper
-
then
immediately
extend
the airbrakes
and
recover
with
gentle
up-elevator.
The CG
is
too
far aft.
Add nose
ballast, and
set slight up
elevator
trim
In order
to obtain
worthwhile
results, changes
in
nose ballast
should
be
made in increments
of at
least 10
grams,
but
not
more
than 40
grams.
Never attempt
to
fly circles or
steep turns
on the
landing ap-
oroach
at low
altitude. Extreme
angles of
bank close
to the
ground
are a
recipe
for
disaster.
The approach
angle
can be
controlled
very
precisely
by using the
airbrakes.
The brakes
are
also
uselul
on aero
-
tow and
for aerobatics: on
tow, the
model's
altitude
relative
to the tug can
be controlled,
and
in aerobatic
flying
you
can reduce
speed
quickly
by extending
the brakes.
lf
the
model climbs
dangerously
high
in
powerful
lift, the brakes
wl'i
quickly
and safely
pull
the
model down again.
ll .r
have installed
two aileron servos
you
have the
possibility
-
assuming
that
your
radio has the
lacilities
-
of
making
the aile-
rons double
as camber-changing
flaps.
Maximum
tlap move-
ment should
be
no more than
about 4 mm down.
When
the aile-
rons
are dellected
down
the maximum
lift of the section
is
in-
creased
slightly,
at the
expense of
reduced aileron
response.
Please
bear this
in mind if
you
lower the
flaps close
to the
ground.
Larger
flap movements
otfer
no advantage.
With tlaps
drooped
the model
is better able lo exploit
light
lift. Allow
your-
self
many
tlights to explore
and
master the
model's
flying cha-
racteristics
and control
responses,
untilyou are
contident
that
you
are able
to
get
the best
out ol
it.
Using
the
plug
-
in
wing extensions
The
wing extensions
increase the
litt-producing
area
of the
wing at
the cost of
a slight
increase
in drag.
Fitting them
is ad-
van[ageous
for flying
in
thermals,
light
wind conditions
and
lor
distance
llights.
For fast
flying
(aerobatics,
strong
winds and slope
soaring)
the
extensions
should
be removed
(both
sides), and
replaced
with
the
plug
-
in wingtips.
This
raises the
model's cruising
speed
and
manoeuvrability.
The
variable
wingspan due
to the
plug
-
in
wing extensions
wid-
ens the
model's speed
range,
and thus the
range of
conditions
in
which it can
be flown.
This is exactly
the same
advantage
as it
confers
in the full- size.
In our experience,
if
you
fit or
remove the
wing extensions
dur-
ing a
llying session
it takes a
little time
to
get
used
to the
new
configuration
before
you
are able
to
get
maximum
performance
agarn.
Please take
the trouble
to learn to
use the extra
lacilities
-
the
ballast
tubes,
flaps and
plug
-
in tip
extensions.
After a
little ex-
perimentation
you
will be able
to match
your
model
accurately
to the
prevailing
conditions.
Please
bear safely
in mind at all
times
when f lying
your
new
mo-
del.
Exercising control
over
a model
aircraft calls
for a high
awa-
reness of
responsibility
trom the
pilot.
Never fly
in
such
a
way
that
you
endanger
or annoy
other
people.
Get to know
your
model over
many hours
of flying, and
you
will
gradually
gain
an
awareness
of the
possibilities
of
this highly
re-
Iined model.
We
guarantee
that
you
will experience
the
true fas-
cination
of
flight with lhis
superb
glider.
In ridge
litt at the slope'
or
riding the
thermals
ataflatfield site,
the
Alpina
magic willthrill
you
with
its appearance
in the air,
its splendid
performance,
and
its docile
handling.
We wish
you
many
hours of
pleasure
with
your
Alpina ,ragiq
and as
many successful
landings as
launches.
