Overview

The International® Electrical System Tester is a diagnostic tool designed for comprehensive testing of electrical systems in vehicles. It features a user-friendly interface with a display and keypad for navigation and data input.

Device Overview

The tester's display includes a Status Indicator for internal batteries, showing power level and charge status (fully charged, decreasing charge, low charge, or powered by external battery). A Title Bar displays the current menu or function name, and the Selection Area below it contains selectable items, input fields, instructions, and warnings. A Scroll Bar on the right side of the screen indicates the user's position within a menu or screen series.

The keypad features Directional Arrows for navigating menus and options, displaying different icons or screens, and selecting icons. An Alphanumeric Keypad allows for direct entry of numerical test parameters. The POWER Button turns the tester on and off, and the device also powers on automatically when connected to a battery. Soft Keys at the bottom of the screen perform functions displayed above them, such as SELECT, BACK, and EXIT, which change based on the current menu or test process. A Voltmeter function is active when the tester is first connected to a battery, displaying the voltage reading until other menus or functions are accessed.

The Main Menu serves as the central hub for all tools and utilities, represented by various icons. Some icons lead directly to a function, while others are menu icons that branch into multiple functions, marked with an asterisk (*) in the manual.

Screen 1 of the Main Menu includes:

  • Battery Test: This function tests a single battery using information selected through a series of screens.
  • System Test:* This menu icon leads to functions for testing the battery pack, individual batteries, and the starting and charging systems.
  • Print/View:* This menu icon allows users to view stored test results and print them to a computer via an infrared (IR) interface dongle.

Screen 2 of the Main Menu includes:

  • Cable Drop Test: This function tests both sides of a circuit simultaneously for voltage drop. It offers three preset tests and one user-defined option.
  • DMM:* This menu icon leads to the Digital Multimeter functions, which include eight test meters, a temperature sensor, and options for clamps and probes.
  • Info:* This menu icon provides access to a test counter, data transfer utility, the tester's software version, and serial number.

Screen 3 of the Main Menu includes:

  • Utility:* This menu icon leads to nine utilities, many of which customize the user interface.

Print/View Menu

The Print/View Menu allows users to review and print stored test results for the last battery, system, and cable tests performed. These results remain in memory until another test of the same type is conducted.

  • View Test: Displays the last Battery and System Test results and can send them to a computer via an IR interface dongle.
  • View Cable Test: Displays the last Cable Drop Test result and can send it to a computer via an IR interface dongle.

Info Menu

The Info Menu provides utilities for managing test data and tracking the tester's usage and history.

  • Totals: Displays the total number of tests conducted, categorized by the tester's lifetime, User ID, and decision.
  • Transfer: A software and hardware package enables the transfer of test data to a computer.
  • Version: Displays the software version, total tests performed since first use, and the serial number.

DMM Menu

The DMM Menu offers a temperature sensor and eight test meters, some of which require specific test leads.

Screen 1 of the DMM Menu includes:

  • DC Volts: Measures DC voltage within a range of 0 to 60 Vdc.
  • AC Volts: Measures AC voltage within a range of 0 to 24 Vac.
  • Scope: Provides voltage trace with time and frequency measurements.

Screen 2 of the DMM Menu includes:

  • DC AMP: Tests the strength of direct current flow through a circuit.
  • AC AMP: Tests the strength of alternating current flow through a circuit.
  • Temp: A sensor that displays temperature in degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius (units selectable in the Utilities Menu).

Screen 3 of the DMM Menu includes:

  • Ohm Meter: Tests a circuit for continuity and resistance measured in ohms (Ω).
  • Diode: Tests a diode for forward voltage drop (probes only).
  • Volts AMP: Measures two signals simultaneously: DC voltage and amperage.

Utility Menu

The Utilities Menu allows users to customize the tester's settings. It is recommended to check default values before testing to adjust desired options.

Screen 1 of the Utility Menu includes:

  • Clock: Settings to adjust the date and time.
  • Users: Add, edit, or delete up to twenty-four User IDs using a maximum of seven alphanumeric characters.
  • Shop: Allows adding a custom header to printed test results.

Screen 2 of the Utility Menu includes:

  • Display: Settings to adjust screen contrast and backlight time.
  • Coupon: Enables or disables a coupon created in the Edit Coupon utility.
  • Edit Coupon: Allows creation and storage of up to three separate coupons to be printed on test results.

Screen 3 of the Utility Menu includes:

  • Temp: Selects degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit for temperature measurements.
  • Language: Sets the language for the display and printouts.
  • Format: Formats the SD card to receive data, which also erases all existing data on the card.

Screen 4 of the Utility Menu includes:

  • Update: Updates the tester software via files on an SD card.
  • Screen Dump: Sends the screen image from the tester to the EZ-Tech® system.

Required Test Leads

Different tests require specific test leads:

  • Battery Test: Requires standard battery test leads.
  • Amp Clamp: Used for current measurements, particularly with the Charging System test.
  • Cable Drop: Requires specific cable drop test leads.
  • DMM Clamps or Probes: Used for various DMM functions.

Usage Features

  • Cable Drop Test: Requires two test lead connections as illustrated in the manual.
  • Amp Clamp: When performing the Charging System test, it is recommended to use the amp clamp provided with the International® Electrical System Tester kit. The clamp should be placed around the positive alternator cable prior to the test.

Maintenance Features

  • Software Updates: The tester's software can be updated via files on an SD card through the "Update" utility.
  • Data Management: The "Format" utility allows formatting the SD card, which also erases all data, useful for starting fresh or troubleshooting data issues. The "Transfer" utility facilitates moving test data to a computer for archiving or further analysis.
