Overview

The Nikon XF & XF HP Series Total Station is a precision surveying instrument designed for accurate measurement of angles and distances in various applications. This quick start guide provides essential information for its setup, operation, and maintenance.

Function Description

The total station integrates an electronic theodolite for angle measurement and an electronic distance meter (EDM) for distance measurement. It is equipped with a display and keyboard for user interaction, allowing for data input, configuration, and display of measurement results. The instrument features a carrying handle for portability, an optical sight (finder) for initial targeting, and a telescope with focusing and diopter rings for precise aiming. Clamps and tangent screws for both horizontal and vertical movements enable fine adjustment of the telescope's orientation. The device also includes a laser plummet for accurate centering over a survey point, and USB ports for data transfer and external connectivity.

Important Technical Specifications

The Nikon XF & XF HP Series Total Station comes in two main variants: XF Series and XF HP Series, with differing laser safety classifications and output powers.

Laser Specifications (XF Series):

  • Laser pointer: Class 2
    • Wavelength: 630 to 680 nm
    • Output power: CW Po ≤ 1 mW
  • Distance meter: Class 1
    • Wavelength: 850 to 890 nm
    • Output power: Pulse Po ≤ 22 W
    • Pulse width: < 5 ns
  • Laser plummet: Class 2
    • Wavelength: 635 nm
    • Output power: CW Po < 1.0 mW

Laser Specifications (XF HP Series):

  • Laser pointer: Class 3R
    • Wavelength: 630 to 680 nm
    • Output power: CW Po ≤ 4.75 mW
  • Distance meter (Reflectorless mode): Class 3R
    • Wavelength: 630 to 680 nm
    • Output power: Pp <8.75 mW, Po <4.75 mW
    • Pulse width: 1.2 ns/400 MHz to 1.6 ns/320 MHz
  • Distance meter (Prism mode): Class 1
    • Wavelength: 630 to 680 nm
    • Output power: Pp <0.037 mW, Po <0.02 mW
    • Pulse width: 1.2 ns/400 MHz to 1.6 ns/320 MHz
  • Laser plummet: Class 3R (wavelength and output power not explicitly stated for HP series plummet, but generally higher than Class 2).

General Specifications:

  • Input voltage: 4.5 to 5.2 V DC (for data output/external power/input connector)
  • Battery: Two battery packs are supplied.
  • Compliance:
    • IEC60825-1:2014 (Class 2 for XF Series, Class 3R for XF HP Series)
    • FDA21CFR Part 1040 Sec. 1040.10 and 1040.11 (except for deviations pursuant to Laser Notice No.50, dated June 24, 2007)

Usage Features

The total station is designed for ease of use and precision in field operations.

  • User Interface: Features a Face-1 display/keyboard for intuitive control and data entry.
  • Leveling: Equipped with leveling screws and a circular level for precise horizontal setup. The tribrach clamp knob secures the instrument to the tribrach.
  • Targeting: An optical sight (finder) assists in initial targeting, while the telescope eyepiece and diopter ring allow for clear viewing and focusing on the target. Horizontal and vertical clamps and tangent screws provide fine adjustment for accurate aiming.
  • Power Management: The instrument uses two battery packs, which can be easily inserted and removed via the battery box release knob. The battery box is designed for secure closure to maintain watertightness.
  • Connectivity: Includes two USB ports for data transfer and external device connection, as well as a dedicated connector for data output, external power, or input.
  • Portability: Supplied with a carrying handle, carrying case, and two shoulder straps for convenient transport.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of the total station.

  • Battery Charging: Battery packs are supplied partly charged and must be fully charged using the provided battery charger and AC adapter before first use. Users are advised to refer to the instruction manual for battery safety information.
  • Battery Calibration: Battery calibration is recommended approximately every six months, or more often if needed, to ensure accurate reporting of the remaining battery charge.
  • Battery Insertion: Before inserting a battery pack, it is crucial to clear any dust or foreign particles from the battery contacts to ensure a reliable connection.
  • Watertightness: The battery box cover must be securely closed (until a click sound is heard) to maintain the instrument's watertightness and protect internal components from environmental elements.
  • Cleaning: The standard components include a rain/dust cover and an objective lens cap to protect optical parts when not in use. Regular cleaning of the instrument, especially optical surfaces, is essential for optimal performance.
  • Safety: Users must adhere to all safety precautions and control measures specified in the IEC60825-1:2014 standard and the Nikon XF & XF HP Instruction Manual, particularly concerning laser safety. Only qualified and trained personnel should install, adjust, and operate the laser equipment. Direct viewing into the laser beam, with or without optical instruments, should be avoided, and the laser beam path should be located well above or below eye level where practicable.
