Overview

The Norstar Doorphone is a telecommunication device designed to provide call notification and hands-free communication from an entry point to other stations within a Meridian Norstar™ telephone system. It connects to a digital Norstar telephone port and identifies itself to the KSU (Key Service Unit) as an M7208 Norstar telephone.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Doorphone is to facilitate two-way, hands-free voice communication between a visitor at an entry location and an internal station on the Norstar system. When a visitor presses the Call button on the Doorphone, it initiates a call to a pre-programmed internal telephone or group of telephones, alerting them to the visitor's presence. The system can be configured to ring a specific "Call DN" (Directory Number) telephone for a programmed number of rings, followed by chimes heard at all appropriate sets included in a programmed page zone.

Beyond basic communication, the Doorphone offers optional door opening functionality. This can be achieved by integrating one of two optional hardware devices: an External Relay Module (ERM) or a Door Opening Controller (DOC).

  • External Relay Module (ERM): When an ERM is installed, the door opening mechanism is activated, and the call is immediately terminated after the door is opened. The ERM connects to the KSU's external page port contacts, providing high-current switching capability.
  • Door Opening Controller (DOC): With a DOC, the call continues even after the door is opened, allowing for extended communication. The call only ends when the QUIT or Rls (Release) button is pressed on the internal telephone. The DOC connects to the Doorphone via a pair of wires and requires specific dip-switch settings for proper operation.

The Doorphone can also be used as a paging device by assigning it to a page zone, though it should not be assigned the same page zone used for its own door chimes. The Norstar Page feature can deliver the Doorphone chime immediately or after a prescribed number of rings, and it is recommended to assign more than one telephone to the page zone used by the Doorphone for broader alerting.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Compatibility: Compatible with North American KSU platforms for DR2, DR3, DR4, DR5, Modular ICS Release 1-T1, Centrex, and greater, for 3X8, Compact, and Modular systems.
  • Wiring: Uses standard 3-pair cable from the KSU to the Doorphone location. One pair connects the "KSU" terminals of the Doorphone to a vacant station port of the KSU. A second pair can be used for an optional DOC. All Doorphone connections are polarity insensitive. Wires should be stripped 6 mm (1/4") before insertion.
  • Distance: Can be located within 300 m (1000 ft) of the KSU using .5 mm wire (24 AWG) or less. This distance can be extended to 780 m (2600 ft) with the connection of a Station Auxiliary Power Supply (SAPS) to the Doorphone.
  • Environmental Requirements:
    • Temperature: -35° to 60°C (-31° to 140°F)
    • Relative Humidity: 5% to 95% non-condensing
    • Background Noise: up to 70 dBA
  • Mounting: Can be flush-mounted in a standard recessed double-gang electrical box or surface-mounted using the enclosed optional surface mount bracket. It should be mounted at approximately shoulder height, adhering to local handicapped access regulations if applicable. Gaskets are provided for both flush and wall mount installations to prevent moisture ingress in unprotected locations.
  • FCC Regulations: This digital apparatus complies with Class B limits for radio noise emissions and CSA specification C108.8. When powered by a Station Auxiliary Power Supply instead of the KSU station port, it does not exceed Class A limits for radio noise emissions.

Usage Features:

  • Call Initiation: A physical "Call" button on the Doorphone initiates a call to pre-programmed internal stations.
  • Hands-free Communication: Provides two-way, hands-free voice communication once a call is established.
  • Door Opening Control: Optional integration with ERM or DOC allows for remote door release from an internal telephone.
  • Programmable Chime Types: Offers multiple chime types (1, 2, 3, 4, or none) to customize the alert sound.
  • Adjustable Volume: The chime volume can be set to low, medium, or high.
  • Page Zone Integration: Chimes can be directed to specific page zones (1, 2, or 3) within the Norstar system.
  • Programmable Rings: The number of rings before page chimes are presented can be configured.
  • Door Opening Dial Digit: For DOC installations, a specific digit (0-9, *, or #) can be programmed to activate the door opening mechanism.
  • Door Opening Time: The duration of the door opening mechanism activation can be set to 0.25, 3, 6, or 15 seconds.

Maintenance Features:

  • Installation Guide: Comprehensive instructions are provided for installation, including wiring, mounting, and programming.
  • Troubleshooting Section: A dedicated section helps diagnose common issues, such as the Doorphone not working, not ringing, or not presenting page chimes. It includes steps to verify wiring, KSU port configuration, and programming parameters.
  • Configuration Programming: The Doorphone's parameters (Chime Type, Volume, Door Opening Capabilities) are programmed from a Norstar M7310 or M7324 telephone using specific feature codes.
  • Initialization Period: After connecting to the KSU, the Doorphone requires up to four minutes for initialization before programming can commence.
  • Error Reporting: The display on the programming telephone will show "F9XX: inactive" if the Doorphone is not connected or fails, and provides an option to "REMOVE" it from the system's memory.
  • Repair Facilities: Addresses and contact information for Northern Telecom product service centers in both the USA and Canada are provided for equipment malfunction and repairs.
  • Protection Devices: For external wiring, Northern Telecom recommends specific secondary protectors (e.g., ITW LINX MP1A-90-27) for safety and protection.
