You attempted to take a picture of
one of the following difficult-to-focus
subjects: a low-contrast subject, a
subject with no vertical lines, a
subject with an extremely bright
area in the part of the image
(reflected light, light from a lamp,
etc.), both far and near subjects with
strong backlighting, a subject with a
repeating pattern, and a fast-moving
subject.
Use the Spot mode to focus on a
different subject located at the same
distance, apply the focus lock and
then take the picture. (p. 42)
