The Omega Spacemaster Z-33 is a sophisticated quartz watch designed for pilots, featuring a range of functions for timekeeping, flight logging, and other utilities. It boasts a thermocompensated movement, a perpetual calendar, and sapphire glass with double anti-reflective treatment. The watch is water-resistant to 30 meters (3 bar) and uses a button-type lithium-manganese dioxide battery cell.
Function Description:
The Spacemaster Z-33 offers a comprehensive suite of functions, accessible through its pushers and crown, and displayed on its digital screen.
-
Timekeeping:
- Local Time (TIME 1): Displays and allows setting of the local time. This is the base time for other time-related functions.
- Second Time Zone (TIME 2): Displays and allows setting of a second time zone, adjustable in 30-minute intervals.
- United Time Coordinated (UTC) / Time Difference: Displays the UTC and allows setting the difference between local time and UTC, also in 30-minute intervals. The value can be negative if UTC is behind local time.
- Synchronising Hands and Setting Display Modes (Neutral Display): This function allows for controlling and setting the synchronization of the analog hands with the digital display, setting the time display mode (24h or 12h), setting the day and month display mode (day/month or month/day), and selecting the flight log operating mode.
-
Calendar:
- Calendar: Displays and allows setting of the day of the week and the date. The perpetual calendar is programmed up to 2199.
- Calendar Week: Displays the numbers of the day of the year (DAY) and of the week (WK).
-
Alarm:
- Alarm: Displays, activates, and allows setting of an alarm. The alarm can be set for specific days (every day, Monday to Friday, or Saturday and Sunday only). Activation is indicated by a beep.
-
Chronograph:
- Chronograph: Measures short periods of time to within 1/100th of a second, with a split-time function. It can measure up to 99 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds, and 99 hundredths of a second, after which it automatically stops and resets to zero.
-
Timer:
- Timer: A countdown function that allows setting a pre-defined time period from 99 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds down to 1 second. It features short beeps and a flashing screen during the last 5 seconds, and long beeps with a flashing screen when time expires. It also beeps again after 1 minute if not stopped. A special function allows adjustment to the nearest minute.
-
Flight Log:
- Flight Log: Allows recording up to ten flight sequences (0 to 9). When the 11th flight is recorded, the first one is automatically erased. There are two modes for saving flights:
- "BLOCK to BLOCK time" mode (B0, B1, etc.): Records the time and date of start of taxiing (OFF), take-off (TOF), landing (LAN), and end of taxiing (ON), as well as the duration of the flight (b-b). This mode differentiates effective flight hours from taxiing time.
- "Flight time" mode (F0, F1, etc.): Records the time and date of take-off (TOF), landing (LAN), and the duration of the flight (FLT).
- Flights can be recorded without displaying the function, as the watch automatically records the time and date for each sequence.
- The flight log also allows for consultation and deletion of individual or all recorded flights.
Usage Features:
The watch's operation is primarily managed through a combination of pushers and the crown, each with specific functions:
-
General Pusher (located at 8 o'clock):
- Press once: Lights up the display and clears the analog hands for better visibility.
- Press twice: Records a flight sequence (for the flight log).
-
Chrono/Timer Start/Stop Pusher (located at 2 o'clock):
- Starts/stops the chronograph or timer.
- In setting mode, validates the current setting and moves to the next setting.
-
Alarm On/Off Pusher (located at 4 o'clock):
- Switches the alarm ON or OFF.
-
Chrono/Timer Reset Pusher (located at 10 o'clock):
- Resets the chronograph or timer to its initial value, or performs split/reset to zero.
- In flight log mode, allows deletion of one or all flights.
-
Time 2 Pusher (located at 6 o'clock):
- Returns to local time (TIME 1) in setting mode.
-
Crown:
- Press once: Selects functions.
- Press twice: Accesses the setting mode for the selected function.
- Press and hold: Modifies values during setting.
- Rotate: Returns to normal mode from setting mode.
-
Favourite Functions: Allows quick access to two pre-selected functions. Users can record a function as a favorite by pressing the Chrono/Timer Start/Stop pusher for 3 seconds, and then move between the two favorite functions using the crown.
-
Display Lighting: Clears the hands (to 3 or 9 o'clock) and increases display brightness for 5 seconds to improve visibility in low light.
-
Energy Saving Mode: Simultaneously pressing the two pushers at 8 and 10 o'clock for 5 seconds blocks the hands and deactivates the display to save battery. Time, date, and recorded flights are not lost, but ongoing measurements (chronograph, flight time, timer) are stopped. Exiting this mode is done by pressing the crown.
Maintenance Features:
- Service Intervals: Omega recommends regular servicing every 4 to 5 years, depending on usage and environmental conditions.
- Battery Replacement: A worn-out battery should be replaced promptly by an authorized OMEGA service center to prevent leakage and damage to the movement. The battery type is specified on the guarantee card.
- Water-Resistance Check: The watch's water-resistance should be checked once a year by an authorized OMEGA Service Centre, as it can be affected by gasket aging or accidental shocks to the crown. Chronograph pushers should not be operated underwater.
- Cleaning: For metal bracelets, rubber straps, and water-resistant cases, cleaning with a toothbrush and soapy water, followed by drying with a soft cloth, is recommended.
- Environmental Protection: The watch features the WEEE (RoHS) quartz symbol, indicating that it should not be disposed of with household waste but returned to an authorized collection point for recycling.
