Using the RDS function
What is RDS (RADIO DATA SYSTEM)?
The RDS function will provide you with various services to help you choose a station from the many FM broadcast stations available.
It is difficult choosing one station from among the many broadcast stations available, or to choose the best frequency for the desired program. This
function helps you choose a desired program quickly.
The abbreviations used indicate the following:
PS: Program Service Name: Name of broadcast station
PTY: Program Type: Program category
AF: Alternative Frequency list: Frequency list of the stations servicing the same program in the surrounding area.

Information
Sport
Education
Drama
Culture
Science
Varied
Pop
Rock
M.O.R.
Light classics
Serious classics
Other music
Short accounts of facts, events and publicly expressed views, reportage and actuality.
Topical programme expanding or enlarging upon the news, generally in different
presentation style or concept, including documentary debate, or analysis.
Programme whose purpose is to impart advice in the widest sense, including meteoro-
logical reports and forecasts, consumer affairs, medical help, etc.
Programme concerned with any aspect of sport.
Programme intended primarily to educate, of which the formal element is fundamental.
All radio plays and serials.
Programmes concerned with any aspect of national or regional culture, including
religious affairs, philosophy, social science, language, theatre, etc.
Programmes about the natural sciences and technology.
Used for mainly speech-based programmes usually of lignt-entertainment nature, not
covered by above categories. Examples are: quizzes, panel games, personality
interviews, comedy and satire.
Commercial music, which would generally be considered to be of current popular
appeal, often featuring in current or recent record sales charts.
Contemporary modern music, usually written and performed by young musicians.
(Middle of the Road Music). Common term to describe music considered to be “easy-
listening”, as opposed to Pop, Rock or Classical. Music in this category is often but not
always, vocal, and usually of short duration (< 5 min.).
Classical Musical for general, rather than specialist appreciation. Examples of music in
this category are instrumental music, and vocal or choral works.
Performances of major orchestral works, symphonies, chamber music etc., and
including Grand Opera.
Musical styles not fitting into any of the above categories. Particularly used for specialist
music, of which Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Folk, Country, and Reggae are examples.
