Overview

This document serves as a Quick Start Guide for the Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Modem, designed to help users set up and manage their Optus 5G Home Internet connection. The guide covers initial setup, connection to devices, troubleshooting tips, and information on managing and recycling the modem.

Function Description

The Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Modem is a device that provides high-speed internet access through the Optus 5G network. Its primary function is to receive a 5G signal and convert it into a WiFi signal, allowing multiple devices within a home or office to connect to the internet wirelessly. The modem is designed to deliver "seriously fast speeds" for home internet use. It features a screen that displays important information such as connection status, 5G signal strength, and WiFi login details. The device also includes physical ports for wired connections (LAN) and power.

Usage Features

The setup process for the Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Modem is outlined in four simple steps:

  1. Insert the nano SIM: The modem requires a nano SIM card to connect to the Optus 5G network. A SIM ejector tool is provided to open the SIM tray located at the back of the modem. Users need to push out the smallest size (nano) SIM card from the provided packaging and place it into the tray before reinserting it into the modem.

  2. Power the modem: After inserting the SIM, the modem needs to be connected to a power source. Users plug the modem's power cable into a powerpoint and then press the power button on the modem. A waiting period of approximately 30 seconds is required for the modem to complete its powering-up sequence.

  3. Check the modem screen: The modem features a small screen that provides visual feedback on its status. Users can navigate through this screen using buttons located underneath it. The screen displays critical information such as the 5G connection strength, WiFi login details (name and password), and allows for adjustments like screen brightness. The guide emphasizes checking the "Your connection is excellent" message on the screen to confirm a good 5G signal.

  4. Connect devices to WiFi: Once the modem is powered on and has established a good 5G connection, devices can be connected to its WiFi network. This can be done in two ways: by scanning a QR code displayed on the modem screen or by manually entering the WiFi Name and Password. These details are available on the modem screen, a WiFi fridge magnet, and a sticker on the modem's base.

Finding the Optimal Location:

A crucial aspect of using the Optus 5G Home Internet is finding the best location for the modem. The guide stresses that the modem needs to be placed in a room or area that is:

  • Close to a nearby Optus 5G tower.
  • Free of obstructions that could interfere with the 5G signal.
  • Ideally, facing a window closest to the nearby tower. The "My Optus app" is recommended for this purpose, as it helps users identify Optus 5G towers in their area and guides them in positioning the modem for optimal signal alignment. The app provides real-time feedback on 5G alignment (e.g., "Excellent") and the distance to the nearest 5G tower.

Testing Internet Speed:

After connecting devices, users can test their internet speed using the "My Optus app" via its "Network Pulse" feature. This allows them to verify download and upload speeds, as well as ping, jitter, and loss, ensuring they are getting the performance they expect.

Managing the Modem:

The modem can be managed through a web interface by accessing http://192.168.0.1 in a web browser. This interface allows users to change their WiFi name, password, and other settings. Login details for this interface are typically found on a sticker on the modem's base.

Maintenance Features

The guide provides "Handy tips" for troubleshooting common issues, particularly related to slow internet or WiFi performance:

Slow Internet: If the internet connection is slow, it often indicates a weak 5G signal to the modem. Users are advised to:

  • Check the closest Optus 5G tower using the My Optus app.
  • Ensure the modem is placed near a window facing the nearest Optus 5G tower.
  • Verify that the modem is not blocked by large or metal objects, which can obstruct the 5G signal.
  • Make small repositioning movements and rotate the modem slightly to improve signal strength. The modem screen can be used to view the 5G signal strength in real-time to aid in this process.

Slow WiFi: If the WiFi signal is weak or doesn't cover a large home or office, users might need a WiFi Booster. Optus offers an "Ultra WiFi Booster" that can be paired with the 5G modem to extend WiFi coverage to more rooms. Information on purchasing and setting up a booster is available on the Optus website at optus.com.au/boostersetup.

Recycling Old Modems:

Optus encourages responsible disposal of old modems. Users are advised not to dispose of e-waste in household landfill or recycling bins. Instead, old modems can be taken to any Optus retail store, where staff will assist with recycling. Optus accepts a variety of old and unwanted mobile, home, and internet devices for recycling, promoting environmental responsibility.

Assistance:

For further assistance, users can visit optus.com.au/5GSetup for additional information on setting up their 5G modem. A 5G Home expert team is available by calling 1300 101 693. For 24/7 assistance, a QR code is provided in the guide that can be scanned to message Optus directly.
