1.ABOUTLEADFREESOLDER(PbF:Pbfree)
Note:
Intheinformationbelow,Pb,thesymbolforleadintheperiodictableofelements,willrefertostandard
solderorsolderthatcontainslead.
WewillusePbFsolderwhendiscussingtheleadfreesolderusedinourmanufacturingprocesswhich
ismadefromTin,(Sn),Silver,(Ag),andCopper,(Cu).
Thismodel,andotherslikeit,manufacturedusingleadfreesolderwillhavePbFstampedonthePCB.
Forserviceandrepairworkwesuggestusingthesametypeofsolderalthough,withsomeprecautions,
standardPbsoldercanalsobeused.
Caution
-PbFsolderhasameltingpointthatis50°~70°F,(30°~40°C)higher
thanPbsolder.Pleaseuseasolderingironwithtemperaturecontrol
andadjustitto700°±20°F,(370°±10°C).Incaseofusinghigh
temperaturesolderingiron,pleasebecarefulnottoheattoolong.
-PbFsolderwilltendtosplashifitisheatedmuchhigherthanitsmelting
point,approximately1100°F,(600°C).
-IfyoumustusePbsolderonaPCBmanufacturedusingPbFsolder,
removeasmuchoftheoriginalPbFsolderaspossibleandbesurethat
anyremainingismeltedpriortoapplyingthePbsolder.
-WhenapplyingPbFsoldertodoublelayeredboards,pleasecheckthe
componentsideforexcesswhichmayflowontotheoppositeside(See
figure,below).
1.1.SUGGESTEDPbFSOLDER
ThereareseveraltypesofPbFsolderavailablecommercially.Whilethisproductismanufacturedusing
Tin,Silver,andCopper,(Sn+Ag+Cu),youcanalsouseTinandCopper,(Sn+Cu),orTin,Zinc,and
Bismuth,(Sn+Zn+Bi).Pleasecheckthemanufacturer’sspecificinstructionsforthemeltingpointsof
theirproductsandanyprecautionsforusingtheirproductwithothermaterials.Thefollowingleadfree
(PbF)solderwiregaugearerecommendedforserviceofthisproduct:0.3mm,0.6mmand1.0mm.
