Overview

The Pentair PUV-7 and PUV-14 UV systems are ultraviolet (UV) water disinfection systems designed for residential and professional use. These systems provide continuous, trouble-free operation with minimal maintenance, ensuring clean and safe drinking water.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Pentair UV systems is to disinfect water by exposing it to ultraviolet light. This physical disinfection process effectively neutralizes microbiological contaminants without adding harmful chemicals to the water. The system is designed to be installed either horizontally or vertically at the point-of-use or point-of-entry, depending on the specific flow rate of the unit. A crucial prerequisite for optimal performance is the installation of a 5-micron (nominal) sediment filter upstream of the UV system to prevent mineral deposits and sediment from accumulating on the UV lamp sleeve and sensor window. The UV lamp inside the disinfection system has an effective life of approximately 9000 hours, or about one year of continuous operation. The system's controller tracks the lamp's operational days and provides alerts when replacement is due. For models equipped with a UV sensor, the system also monitors UV intensity, providing warnings if the UV output drops below safe levels, which could indicate a need for cleaning or lamp replacement. In such cases, an optional solenoid output can be activated to stop water flow, preventing the consumption of inadequately treated water.

    • Tannins: < 0.1 ppm (0.1 mg/L)
    • UV Transmittance: > 75% (contact factory for recommendations if UVT < 75%).

Usage Features:

  • Indoor Use Only: The system is designed exclusively for indoor installations.
  • Permanent Connection: Intended for permanent connection to water lines.
  • Cold Water Line Installation: Must be installed on the cold water line only, before any branched lines.
  • Last Treatment Stage: Should be the final water treatment equipment before the faucet.
  • Bypass Assembly Recommendation: A bypass assembly is recommended for offline maintenance, ensuring that water can still be supplied (though undisinfected) during service.
  • Flow Restrictor: The use of a flow restrictor device on the outlet port helps maintain the manufacturer's rated flow.
  • GFCI Protection: The electronic controller must be connected to a Ground Fault Protected Circuit (GFCI) receptacle for safety.
  • Controller Mounting: The controller should be mounted horizontally above or beside the chamber to prevent moisture damage.
  • UV Lamp Life Indicator: The controller displays the remaining days of lamp life (default 365 days), counting down to 0. At 0 days, an "A3" code and an intermittent audible chirp indicate lamp replacement is needed.
  • Lamp Life Deferral: The "A3" alarm can be deferred up to four times for seven days each by pressing the timer reset button, allowing time to obtain a new lamp.
  • Total Days of Operation: The controller can display the total running time of the system in days, which cannot be reset.
  • UV Intensity Monitoring (Plus Systems): For systems with a UV sensor, the controller displays UV output (50-99%). A "low UV" warning (82) and an intermittent audible tone activate if output drops below 50%.
  • Solenoid Output (Optional): In Plus systems, if UV intensity drops to 49% or below, an internal relay opens, stopping AC power to a normally closed solenoid valve, which then closes to stop water flow, preventing consumption of inadequately treated water. This can be temporarily overridden for 12 hours.
  • Over Temperature Warning: The controller displays "Ot" if water temperature in the UV reactor chamber exceeds 40 °C, typically due to extended periods of no water flow.
  • 4-20mA Output (Optional): An optional "Y" cable allows transmission of UV intensity data to a remote location via a 4-20 mA signal.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual UV Lamp Replacement: The UV lamp must be replaced annually (or biennially for seasonal home use) after 9000 hours of continuous operation to ensure adequate disinfection.
  • Lamp Replacement Procedure: A quick and simple procedure requiring no special tools. Involves disconnecting power, shutting off water, releasing pressure, removing the old lamp, inserting the new lamp, reattaching the connector, re-pressurizing, and resetting the lamp life timer.
  • Sleeve Cleaning and Replacement: Minerals in the water can form a coating on the quartz sleeve, reducing UV light transmission. The sleeve should be regularly cleaned with CLR, vinegar, or a mild acid. If it cannot be cleaned or is scratched/cracked, it must be replaced.
  • Sleeve Cleaning Procedure: Involves shutting off water, draining the chamber, removing the UV lamp, disassembling the retaining nuts and O-rings, cleaning the sleeve, reassembling with new O-rings, and re-pressurizing.
  • UV Sensor Cleaning (if applicable): Mineral deposits and sediment can accumulate on the sensor window. The sensor should be carefully cleaned with a cotton swab and commercial scale remover, then re-inserted to ensure a water-tight seal.
  • System Sanitization: After installation or any service that requires shutting down the UV unit, the entire distribution system (including hot water tanks) must be chemically disinfected with chlorine (household bleach) to eliminate bacteriological contaminants. This involves adding bleach to the filter housing, flushing all faucets until bleach is smelled, waiting 30 minutes (without using water), then flushing until no chlorine smell is detectable, and finally reinstalling filters.
  • Controller Reset: The timer reset button is used to defer lamp life alarms and reset the lamp life timer after lamp replacement.
  • Keep Components Clean and Dry: All components should be kept clean and dry for optimal performance.
  • Not for Salt Water Applications: The system is not designed for use with salt water.
