is
simple.
Hard
water
passes
through
a
cylinder
containing a
special
softening
resin.
The
hardness
minerals/in
the
water
are
removed
by
the
resin,
leaving
softened
water.
Periodically
the
resin
is
cleaned
by
rinsing
with
a
brine
solution
which
then
flushes
the
accumulated
hardness
minerals
to
a
nearby
drain.
This
process
is
called
regeneration.
